Literature is closely linked to human experience. The extent to which a narrative represents human experience in a way that readers can understand is referred to as experientiality. One theme frequently addressed in literary works is trauma. Trauma is evident in narrative construction, making literature the primary medium for trauma when individuals cannot articulate their stories due to a lack of space, particularly regarding the history of the 1965 and 1998 events. Literary works that depict the trauma of characters regarding these historical events include the novels Ingatan Ikan-Ikan (2024) and Korpus Uterus (2025) by Sasti Gotama. Sasti Gotama’s storytelling style features a fluid writing style as a representation of the struggles of the characters within, which relates to écriture féminine.

This study employs natural narratology theory, grounded in Monika Fludernik’s concept of experientiality and Hélène Cixous’s concept of écriture féminine, using an explanatory method. The aim of this study is to analyze the traumatic experientiality of the characters constructed in Sasti Gotama’s novels and to reveal the experientiality of the characters in dismantling the dominant narrative of masculinity through écriture féminine.

Using an explanatory method, this study found, among other things, that the historical setting functions as quasi-mimetic in Sasti Gotama’s novels by obscuring the setting and certain events; thus, these novels do not elaborate on the historical aspect through grand narratives. The traumatic experientiality of the characters falls within bodily experience, which is then mimicked as a legacy of trauma. The use of the third-person perspective serves an ethical function: to avoid claims of authoritative ownership over the trauma. Traumatic experientiality is fragmented into temporal, perceptual, and linguistic fragmentation. Traumatic experientiality unfolds through four levels of natural narration, namely: Level I indicates that the characters lose their agency; Level II visualizes traumatic experientiality into several schemas, namely the ACTION, VIEWING, REFLECTING, and TELLING AND EXPERIENCING schemas; Level III relates to cognitive framework genres, namely historical narratives, witness narratives, essay literature, and experiential and representational personal experience stories; Level IV understands trauma as a human experience that includes the psychological wounds of victims of the 1965 and 1998 tragedies, as well as traces of feminist discourse. The characters in both novels equate nature (ikan mas koki and sulur kacang panjang) to resist binary oppositions, while the human body, in the form of the womb and memory, serves as a counter-narrative to phallogocentrism. Through the male character, masculinity is presented as a negotiable concept.
