Over the past several decades, the expansion of oil palm plantations in Indonesia has been promoted as a pathway toward economic growth and the improvement of rural livelihoods, particularly for smallholders. At the local level, oil palm emerged as an alternative following the decline of previous commodity economies and subsequently reshaped rural socio-ecological landscapes. Yet, rather than producing stability, the integration of smallholders into the oil palm economy has often been accompanied by increasing economic uncertainty, ecological vulnerability, and unequal market relations. This research focuses on the lives of independent oil palm smallholders in Buluh Nipis Village, Kampar Regency, Riau, who continue to cultivate oil palm amid fragile and uncertain living conditions. From this context, the study raises a central question: why do smallholders continue to endure conditions that materially disadvantage them without turning these conditions into the basis for questioning the structures that produce them? Using a qualitative ethnographic approach based on participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, this study combines the concepts of capital landscapes, agrarian precarity, and ethical subjectivity to examine the relationship between structural conditions and the ways subjects make sense of their lives. The findings show that smallholders in Buluh Nipis live within conditions of socio-ecological precarity marked by limited access to land, dependence on unequal market relations, increasing ecological risks such as unpredictable flooding, and weak political and economic protection. Within these conditions, takdir (destiny) becomes the primary moral framework through which smallholders understand recurring failures, sustain hope, and preserve dignity. It is precisely here that the central analytical tension of this study emerges: takdir simultaneously operates as a source of moral strength and as a mechanism through which precarity is reproduced. On the one hand, it enables smallholders to continue perceiving life as meaningful and worth living despite persistent uncertainty; on the other hand, it relocates structural problems into a cosmological domain, thereby obscuring the power relations that produce vulnerability and making them less likely to be questioned directly. This study argues that agrarian capitalism operates most effectively not only through material domination, but also through the moral frameworks embedded within precarious subjects themselves. This explains why remaining in oil palm cultivation, despite reproducing precarity, is not merely a rational economic choice, but a mode of life shaped by pressure, constraint, and the absence of viable alternatives. Over time, these conditions sediment into lived experiences that shape subjects through moral and ethical infrastructures.
