This research examines the representation of femininity on the social media platform TikTok and its influence on the formation of body image among female students at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL), Universitas Gadjah Mada. The primary objectives are to describe the forms of femininity displayed by beauty and fashion influencers and to analyze the mechanisms of audience body image formation resulting from content exposure. The study utilizes a qualitative descriptive method with a netnographic approach toward three influencer accounts (@tasyafarasya, @sashfir, and @shaaqy), complemented by in-depth interviews with ten female student informants. The theoretical framework is built upon Erving Goffman’s Dramaturgical Theory and Judith Butler’s Gender Performativity Theory.
The findings reveal that femininity on TikTok is a social construct produced through impression management on a digital front stage. Although representation styles vary, the influencers show a convergent pattern regarding visual aesthetic standards. The formation of the students' body image occurs through a process of upward social comparison and body surveillance. The impact of this exposure is ambivalent, on one hand, it serves as a source of self-care inspiration, but on the other, it triggers insecurity and body dissatisfaction due to unrealistic standards produced by filters and editing hidden on the back stage. Furthermore, the TikTok algorithm reinforces this phenomenon by repeatedly displaying specific femininity norms on the For You Page (FYP), effectively naturalizing these beauty standards as the ideal gender performance.
