Heroisme Perempuan dalam Film The Woman King: Sebuah Kajian Representasi Gender

Skripsi ini merupakan hasil penelitian yang membahas mengenai representasi dan heroisme perempuan dalam film The Woman King. Film ini mengangkat kisah nyata mengenai sejarah Kerajaan Dahomey yang terletak di Afrika Barat dengan menampilkan tokoh-tokoh perempuan. Tokoh-tokoh perempuan tersebut digambarkan sebagai sosok yang memiliki peran strategis dalam struktur militer, politik dan kultural Kerajaan Dahomey, khususnya berperan sebagai pelindung raja, rakyat dan Kerajaan Dahomey dari perdagangan manusia, musuh dan penjajah Eropa. Keunikan film ini terletak pada alur cerita yang disampaikan melalui cara representasi tandingan, yakni menampilkan peran penting citra maskulinitas perempuan Afrika yang selama ini tidak biasa ditampilkan dalam layar Hollywood. Secara khusus, film ini merepresentasikan perempuan sebagai subjek aktif melalui tokoh bernama Nanisca dan pasukan Agojie, mereka menjadi simbol perlawanan dan keberdayaan perempuan dalam menjalankan fungsi kepahlawanan. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk memahami bagaimana film The Woman King merepresentasikan peran dan posisi perempuan dalam masyarakat Kerajaan Dahomey. Penelitian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan bagaimana representasi heroisme perempuan dikonstruksikan dalam narasi film, khususnya melalui karakter dari tokoh Nanisca sebagai tokoh utama. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan metode analisis semiotika John Fiske dan teori representasi Stuart Hall. Proses pengumpulan data melalui observasi pada adegan film yang kemudian, dianalisis berdasarkan tiga level, yaitu level realitas, representasi dan ideologi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan film The Woman King menegaskan bahwa representasi perempuan menantang stereotip gender tradisional, menunjukkan pergeseran peran atau membuka ruang pemaknaan baru tentang peran perempuan sebagai subjek aktif yang lekat pada maskulinitas dalam narasi sejarah dan budaya populer. Film tersebut juga menunjukkan bagaimana konstruksi representasi heroisme perempuan terbentuk melalui interseksionalitas identitas serta konstruksi heroisme perempuan sebagai praktik sosial dan ideologi yang tidak hanya berbasis pada kekerasan atau dominasi fisik, melainkan melalui kepemimpinan, solidaritas kolektif dan negosiasi terhadap relasi kuasa gender, ras dan sejarah kolonial. 

This thesis is the result of research that discusses the representation and heroism of women in the film The Woman King. This film tells a true story about the history of the Kingdom of Dahomey located in West Africa by featuring female characters. These female characters are depicted as figures who have strategic roles in the military, political and cultural structures of the Kingdom of Dahomey, specifically acting as protectors of the king, the people and the Kingdom of Dahomey from human trafficking, enemies and European colonizers. The uniqueness of this film lies in the storyline that is conveyed through a counter-representation, namely showing the important role of the image of African female masculinity that has not been commonly shown on Hollywood screens. Specifically, this film represents women as active subjects through the character named Nanisca and the Agojie troops, they become symbols of resistance and women's empowerment in carrying out heroic functions. The purpose of this study is to understand how the film The Woman King represents the role and position of women in the society of the Kingdom of Dahomey. This study also aims to reveal how the representation of female heroism is constructed in the film's narrative, especially through the character of Nanisca as the main character. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with John Fiske's semiotic analysis method and Stuart Hall's representation theory. The data collection process through observation of film scenes which are then analyzed based on three levels, namely the level of reality, representation and ideology. The results of the study show that the film The Woman King emphasizes that the representation of women challenges traditional gender stereotypes, shows a shift in roles or opens up new spaces of meaning about the role of women as active subjects who are closely linked to masculinity in historical narratives and popular culture. The film also shows how the construction of representations of female heroism is formed through the intersectionality of identity and the construction of female heroism as a social practice and ideology that is not only based on violence or physical domination, but through leadership, collective solidarity and negotiation of power relations of gender, race and colonial history.
