This dissertation focuses on the digital collaborative network within the digital activism conducted by the Digital Literacy Activists Network (Japelidi), a collaborative academic digital literacy activist community in Indonesia. This research is based on the assumption that digital literacy social movements in Indonesia are still sporadic, fragmented, overlapping, and uncoordinated systematically. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how Japelidi's digital collaborative network is built within its digital activism.
This research utilizes the core theory of Digital Collaborative Networks by Camarinha Matos & Afsarmanesh, which provides a framework for understanding cross-actor network structures, and the 3Cs of Collaboration by Fuks et al., to explore the collaborative process through communication, coordination, and cooperation. Supporting theory utilizes resource mobilization theory to explain how resources are mobilized. Participatory culture, meanwhile, explains the forms of digital participation that emerge within collaborative practices.
This qualitative research employs a virtual ethnographic approach to resource mobilization and participatory culture conducted by Japelidi. Data collection involved a combination of online and offline participant observation, in-depth interviews, and cyber media analysis of Japelidi's activities across various digital platforms. Data analysis explored the dynamics of interaction, the meaning of participation, and resource mobilization within digital collaborative networks.
The results indicate that Japelidi's digital activism reflects the characteristics of a new social movement that is collaborative, participatory, and network-based. Resource mobilization occurs through the exchange of knowledge, expertise, academic reputation, and social legitimacy. While the participatory culture within Japelidi demonstrates four forms of engagement: affiliation, expression, collaboration, and circulation, challenges also arise, including pseudo-participation, academic elitism, and the uncovering of political economy within the dynamics of Japelidi's digital activism. This phenomenon demonstrates that amidst the spirit of solidarity and collaboration, negotiations still occur between academic idealism and political economic interests.
These findings formed the basis for the development of the Inclusive Digital Collaborative Network conceptual model, which describes digital academic collaboration as a collective, reflective, participatory, and inclusive learning space. This model emphasizes that the success of digital literacy social movements is determined not only by the power of technology and networks, but also by the actors' ability to manage power relations, collaborative ethics, and the inclusiveness of participation.
