Transportation plays a vital role in supporting tourist mobility in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, with Tugu Railway Station serving as the primary gateway for tourist arrivals. The growing number of tourists has increased the demand for first- and last-mile transportation modes around the station, which remain insufficiently integrated, potentially reducing travel efficiency and comfort. Therefore, understanding tourists’ transport mode choice is essential to support effective and sustainable transportation planning. This study aims to examine tourist characteristics, travel characteristics, perceptions of transport mode attributes, and the factors influencing first and last mile transport mode choice among tourists arriving at Tugu Railway Station.
This study employs a deductive approach with a quantitative descriptive research design. Data were collected through questionnaire surveys of domestic and international tourists and analyzed using descriptive statistics, spatial analysis, and multinomial logistic regression. The analysis explores transport mode choice patterns based on tourist characteristics, travel characteristics, and perceptions of transport mode attributes.
The findings indicate that tourists are predominantly of productive age with medium to high education and income levels. App-based ride-hailing services are the most preferred mode due to ease of access and service flexibility. Rental vehicles are commonly used for group travel and longer distances, while public transportation is mainly chosen by cost-oriented tourists, although its utilization remains relatively low. Multinomial logistic regression results confirm that transport mode choice is significantly influenced by tourist and travel characteristics as well as perceptions of transport mode attributes, particularly safety and affordability. These findings underscore the need for an integrated and sustainable urban tourism transportation system to improve accessibility and service quality in Yogyakarta
