This literary study analyzes 85 comic strips from the Javanese-language magazine Djaka Lodang published in 1998. While previous research has focused on national media, this study highlights a grassroots perspective, offering new insights into the role of local media as a form of cultural resistance during Indonesia’s transitional period of power. The research aims to categorize and analyze the dominant discourses that represent the conditions of the 1998 crisis.
To obtain a specific picture of these emerging discourses, this research employs Max Weber’s theory of social stratification, examining economic, political, and social dimensions. This framework utilizes a qualitative method integrated with Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, which explores three interrelated levels: text (comic narratives), discursive practice (production processes), and sociocultural practice (the historical context of Javanese society).
This research reveals that Djaka Lodang’s 1998 comic strips consistently utilized humor and satire as critical tools to address the realities of the crisis. Six dominant discourses were identified: (1) the monetary crisis's impact on grassroots communities; (2) grassroots responses to the monetary crisis; (3) critiques of corruption, collusion, and nepotism and the New Order's power culture; (4) reform era conditions and the transition of power; (5) shifts in societal values and culture; and (6) the emergence of social tensions. Collectively, these narratives function as a counter-discourse that stood distinct from the dominant narratives of that period. Ultimately, this research affirms that comic strips serve as more than mere recorders of macro-level national issues; they act as reporters of micro-level realities that are deeply relevant to the populace.
