Poetry serves as the definitive cultural emblem (par excellence) of the Arab nation, particularly during the Pre-Islamic era. Unlike contemporary verse, which favors formal simplicity and structural freedom, Pre-Islamic poetry is characterized by stringent prosodic rules and multi-layered complexity. Through a systematic literature review, this study identifies a significant lacuna in the exploration of temporality within Pre-Islamic poetic traditions. This research aims to delineate the patterns of narrative temporality at its primary source by analyzing three seminal long poems (qasidas) by Imru al-Qais: the Mu‘allaqat, Sam? Laka Syauqun, and Al? ?Im ?ab???n. Utilizing Gérard Genette’s narratological framework, the study examines the dimensions of order, frequency, and duration to map the temporal narrative structures inherent in these masterpieces.
The findings reveal that regarding order, the poems are dominated by retrospective trajectories featuring significant use of analepsis, though prolepsis occurs sporadically. These analepses primarily function to introduce characters and serve as ideological instruments to reinforce fakhr (self-vaunting/boasting). In terms of frequency, the narrative employs singulative and repetitive patterns, with repetitions occurring at the level of words, phrases, and events. Regarding duration, the "scene" technique dominates the narrative pace, reflecting the poet’s endeavor to present the narrative dramatically while intensifying plot tension and emotional resonance. The temporal analysis further indicates that the Mu‘allaqat exhibits the highest degree of complexity and structural diversity, reaffirming its status as the quintessential benchmark of classical Arabic poetic excellence.
