This study examines the patron–client relationship between Pemuda Pancasila and the candidate pair Bobby Nasution and Aulia Rachman in the 2020 Medan mayoral election. In the context of local politics in Indonesia, mass organizations (organisasi masyarakat or ormas) such as Pemuda Pancasila no longer function merely as passive supporters. They also play an active role in mass mobilization and in shaping electoral support through the influence they possess. This research aims to answer how the patron–client relationship between Pemuda Pancasila and the Bobby–Aulia candidate pair was formed during the 2020 Medan mayoral contest.
The study employs a qualitative approach, with data collected through literature review, secondary data analysis, and interviews. The findings indicate that the relationship between Bobby Nasution and Pemuda Pancasila was structured and based on an exchange of interests. Pemuda Pancasila was involved in voter mobilization, campaign security, and the distribution of political logistics. This support was not merely an expression of loyalty, but part of a reciprocal relationship that benefited both parties.
This relationship was further demonstrated through declarations of support and the signing of integrity pacts, which helped strengthen electoral viability within the community. In this context, Pemuda Pancasila illustrates a transformation from a conventional mass organization into a local political force with significant and tangible influence. The study concludes that the patron–client relationship was not only pragmatic and electoral in nature, but has become an integral part of a sustainable informal power system at the local level.
