The Role of Cultural Norms in the Symbolic Annihilation of Women in the Grimm Brothers' First Edition of Folk and Fairy Tales

Skripsi ini menganalisis hubungan antara norma budaya Jerman pada awal abad ke-19 dengan symbolic annihilation terhadap perempuan dalam edisi pertama dongen rakyat Grimm Brothers (1812). Penelitian ini membedah representasi perempuan sebagai ibu, penyihir, dan pahlawan. Representasi wanita tersebut berkontribusi pada symbolic annihilation wanita di media. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori symbolic annihilation yang digagas oleh Gaye Tuchman dalam karyanya "The Symbolic Annihilation of Women by the Mass Media" (2000). Penelitian ini melihat adanya narasi perempuan yang dimusnahkan dalam dongeng rakyat Grimm Brothers dengan mekanisme trivialization, condemnation, dan omission. Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa symbolic annihilation perempuan dalam dongen rakyat Grimm Brothers melestarikan marginalisasi perempuan dalam narasi media. Selain itu, penelitian ini memanfaatkan dialog, narasi, dan materi tertulis lain dari cerita yang menampilkan satu atau lebih tokoh antagonis perempuan serta satu atau lebih tokoh protagonis perempuan sebagai data untuk memperoleh hasil seoptimal mungkin. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dongeng rakyat Grimm Brothers mencerminkan symbolic annihilation terhadap perempuan melalui trivialization, condemnation, dan omission, yang terkait dengan standar kecantikan dan kepercayaan religius di Jerman yang turut berkontribusi pada penindasan sistemik terhadap perempuan.

This undergraduate thesis examines the relationship between the cultural norms of early nineteenth-century Germany and the symbolic annihilation of women in the Grimm Brothers' first edition of folk and fairy tales (1812). This thesis dissects the representation of women as mothers, witches, and heroines, highlighting how these portrayals contribute to their symbolic annihilation. Utilizing Gaye Tuchman's theory from "The Symbolic Annihilation of Women by the Mass Media" (2000), it reveals how mechanisms of trivialization, condemnation, and omission perpetuate the marginalization of women in media narratives. Furthermore, this current thesis utilizes dialogues, narrations, and other written materials from completed folk and fairy tales featuring one or more female villains and one or more female heroes as data to achieve the best possible result. The result indicates that the Grimm Brothers' folk and fairy tales reflect the symbolic annihilation of women through trivialization, condemnation, and omission, linked to Germany's beauty standards and religious beliefs that contribute to women's systemic oppression.
