The rapid development of social media has opened up commercialization opportunities to almost all aspects of human life, and this has also had an impact on traditional subcultures, especially subcultures such as Hardcore, which uphold values such as DIY (Do-it-Yourself) that are anti-commodification. The digitalization and commercialization it brings have raised issues regarding authenticity and even the future of the Hardcore subculture itself. In light of this phenomenon, this study aims to: first, explain how DIY ethics are used as a mechanism of resistance by the Hardcore subculture in the contemporary era. Second, analyze the authenticity of DIY ethics as the foundation of subcultural values in the contemporary era.
This thesis employs a descriptive qualitative approach using ethnographic methods. Data collection was conducted from May 2024 to January 2025. Data analysis was conducted simultaneously using primary and secondary data. Primary data was collected through direct observation during visits to gigs and Hardcore subculture Instagram accounts. After obtaining seven informants, observations continued with face-to-face meetings at times determined by the informants, in locations also chosen by the informants. Interviews focused on two main contexts: (1) DIY ethics as a mechanism of resistance in the contemporary era, (2) the authenticity of DIY values in the contemporary era. Secondary data was obtained through the reading of various online news articles, books, and scientific journal articles relevant to the research context.
This thesis highlights two main findings. First, DIY ethics remain the primary foundation of the Hardcore subculture's resistance mechanism in the contemporary era, despite the presence of some market logic, particularly in merchandise aspects. However, this is a strategic effort by the Hardcore subculture to survive in the contemporary era. Second, there are differences in how individuals articulate the authenticity of DIY values in the contemporary era. Some view DIY ethics as an absolute guiding principle for life, while others see the spirit of DIY ethics merely as a coping mechanism. From these two findings, it can be concluded that DIY ethics in the contemporary era is not a rigid and binding value foundation but rather a dynamic and subjective one, provided it upholds the collective value of independence.
