MELINTAS REALITAS: Remediasi Queer Gaze dalam Serial Boys Love Thailand Lovesick (2014) dan Lovesick (2024)

Serial Boys Love (BL) merupakan serial yang menampilkan relasi homoerotis antarpria ke layar kaca. Thailand menjadi salah satu negara yang sukses dengan industri BL-nya. Lovesick merupakan serial BL pertama Thailand pada tahun 2014 yang mendobrak pintu penerimaan relasi queer di tengah masyarakat Thailand yang heteronormatif. Serial ini di-remake dalam media baru pada tahun 2024. Penelitian ini menginvestigasi bentuk remediasi queer dalam dua serial Lovesick dan alasan di balik remediasi tersebut. Mengaplikasikan psikoanalisis visual sebagai metode, penelitian ini melihat bagaimana serial BL menghadirkan subjek-subjek queer dan relasinya ke hadapan penonton. Serta posisionalitas audiens memaknai relasi queer dengan mengelaborasi konsep queer gaze dan keintiman queer. Konsep remediasi juga menjadi kunci sejak proses ini berjalan seiring dengan transformasi sosiokultural masyarakat Thailand selama satu dekade.

Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa queer gaze dalam dua serial Lovesick terartikulasi lewat ruang homososial dalam versi originalnya bias heteronormatif. Posisi kamera juga memposisikan subjek queer berjarak dengan penontonnya. Sementara saat diremediasi pada tahun 2024, ruang homososial tersebut berubah menjadi inklusif dan memungkinkan subjek-subjek queer dapat mengartikulasikan relasi homoerotisnya dengan lebih terbuka. Penonton juga diajak lebih terlibat dengan subjek-subjek queer dan diposisikan sebagai objek tatapan penonton. Transformasi ini sejalan dengan transformasi sosiokultural masyarakat Thailand dan tubuh laki-laki queer yang hadir sebagai fetish of pleasure dan menjadi komoditas industri budaya. Penelitian ini juga menunjukkan transformasi media dari TV menuju platform streaming digital menandai remediasi queer gaze. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa proses remediasi queer gaze dalam serial BL Lovesick, menjadi jendela untuk melihat bagaimana remediasi sebagai strategi yang ambivalen. Di satu sisi dapat menjadi alat politik identitas kelompok queer namun di sisi yang sama dia menjadi komoditas industri budaya BL untuk mencari keuntungan. Serial BL seperti Lovesick juga dimanfaatkan pemerintah sebagai alat soft power dengan menjadikan remediasi sebagai strateginya.

The Boys Love (BL) series depicts homoerotic relationships between men on screen. Thailand is one of the countries that has successfully developed its BL industry. Lovesick, the first Thai BL series in 2014, broke barriers in the acceptance of queer relationships within a heteronormative Thai society. This series was remade on a new media platform in 2024. This study investigates the form of queer remediation in the two Lovesick series and the reasons behind this remediation. Applying visual psychoanalysis as a method, the research examines how the BL series presents queer subjects and their relationships with the audience. It also explores audience positionality in interpreting queer relationships by elaborating on the concepts of queer gaze and queer intimacy. The idea of remediation is central, as this process runs parallel to the sociocultural transformation of Thai society over a decade.

This research shows that queer gaze, The Lovesick (2014) is articulated through homosocial spaces, which are embedded in heteronormative bias—the camera positionings' detachment of queer subjects from their audience. Lovesick (2024) remediates these homosocial spaces to be more inclusive. This situation enables queer subjects to articulate their homoerotic relationship more openly. The audience is invited to engage intimately with queer subjects and position them as the object of the gaze. This transformation aligns to the sociocultural transformation of Thailand and the representation of queer male bodies as objects of pleasure fetishization, as well as the visual commodities within the BL cultural industry. Furthermore, the study reveals that the shift from television to digital streaming platforms marks a remediation of the queer gaze. This research demonstrates that the remediation process of the queer gaze in the BL series Lovesick serves as a window to understand remediation as an ambivalent strategy: on one hand, it acts as a political tool for queer identity groups; on the other, it commodifies BL culture for profit. BL series, such as Lovesick, are also utilized by the government as a form of soft power, with remediation serving as a strategic approach.
