This study aims to describe the characteristics of deadjectival verbs (Vdadj) in narrative compositions written by Indonesian junior high school students, viewed from three main aspects: morphological, syntactic, and semantic features. Vdadj refers to verbs derived from adjectives, such as memerah ‘to blush’, merindukan ‘to miss’, tersesat ‘to get lost’, and similar forms. This research applies derivational morphology theory (Ramlan, 2012; Simatupang, 1979), transitivity theory in syntax (Artawa & Jufrizal, 2013; Dixon & Aikhenvald, 2000), and the theory of grammatical meaning in semantics (Moeliono et al., 2017) as the analytical framework.
The data consists of 735 Vdadj-predicate sentences collected from 98 narrative texts written by Indonesian early adolescents. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed. Data were gathered using observation, followed by note-taking and intuitive techniques. Data analysis was conducted in three stages: (1) morphological analysis using distributional methods and the Immediate Constituent technique (IC) to identify affixes and root adjectives; (2) syntactic analysis by classifying transitivity traits; and (3) semantic analysis using paraphrasing techniques to reveal the grammatical meanings of Vdadj.
The results show that morphologically, deadjectival verbs are formed through affixation and reduplication with adjectives as the root morphemes, including both basic and derived adjectives, whether gradable or non-gradable. The affixes used include prefixes, confixes, compound affixes, and reduplication forms. Syntactically, Vdadj is divided into transitive and intransitive forms. Transitive Vdadj are marked by specific affixes and follow an S-V-O pattern with semantic roles such as agent-action-patient. Intransitive Vdadj follow an S-V pattern with roles like agent-patient or experiencer-event. Semantically, Vdadj carries three grammatical meanings: action, process, and state.
