Feodalisme Teknologi dalam Serial Vampire Academy Karya Richelle Mead: Membaca Tubuh Vampir Kontemporer

Vampire Academy (VA) karaya Richelle Mead merupakan sebuah narasi vampir yang menjadi sebuah metafora persoalan-persoalan sosial dan politik tentang kehidupan kelompok-kelompok vampir, manusia dan separuh vampir (dhampir) di Amerika yang berjuang dalam sebuah struktur hirarki. Melalui tubuh tokoh-tokoh dalam VA, Mead memunculkan kompleksitas kelompok vampir, dhampir, dan manusia dalam sebuah stratifikasi sosial. Penelitian ini membahas dan memetakan stratifikasi sistem feodal melalui tubuh tokoh, transformasi tubuh tokoh sebagai bentuk mobilitas sosial, serta isu feodalisme berbasis teknologi dalam serial VA.

Teori yang digunakan untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan adalah teori tubuh Scheper-Hughes dan Lock (1987), teori transformasi tubuh oleh Steinhoff (2015), teori stratifikasi sosial Weber melalui Grusky (2008) serta teori mobilitas sosial oleh Sorokin (1964). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan objek material serial VA yang terdiri dari enam novel yaitu, Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise, Spirit Bound, dan last Sacrifice.

Temuanpenelitian ini adalah bahwa tubuh-tubuh dalam serial menggambarkan kelas sosial. Kelas sosial tersebut terbentuk karena kepatuhan dari setiap kelas untuk menjalankan perannya dengan dasar teknologi. Teknologo yang hanya dimiliki oleh kelas vampir berupa tubuh yang memilki mkekuatan. relasi yang terbangun antara kelompok vampir, dhampir, dan manusia adalah bentuk struktur masyarakat feodal yang menempatkan kaum vampir pemilik teknologi di puncak hirarki. Transformasi tubuh yang dialami oleh tokoh-tokoh dalam serial VA dari vampir moroi, dhampir, amanusi menjadi vampir strigoi menjadi bentuk usaha mobilitas sosial bukan dalam struktur , tetapi keluar dari struktur feodal. Strigoi dianggap agen kejahatan yang tidak memiliki kode moral dan menjadi oposisi struktur feodal. Feodalisme teknologi menjadi isu yang diangkat pengarang sebagai bentuk kritik terhadap kondisi kehidupan masyrakat Amerika yang sangat bergantung pada teknologi yang menyebabkan pemilik teknologi memiliki kontrol untuk mengatur nilai dan norma sosial politik masyarakat. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa melalui serial VA, pengarang mengkritik rigiditas stratifikasi feodal teknologi yang tertutup

Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy (VA) series formulates a vampire narrative that symbolizes overarching social and political themes affecting vampires, dhampirs (half-vampires), and humans within a stringent hierarchical framework in American society. Mead elucidates the intricacies of intergroup dynamics and their placement within a social stratification through the lived experiences of its characters. This paper analyzes the feudal stratification system as depicted through character embodiment, the transformation of bodies as a means of social mobility, and the rise of techno-feudalism as a significant thematic issue within the VA series.

The theoretical framework incorporates Scheper-Hughes and Lock’s (1987) theory of the body, Steinhoff’s (2015) theory of body transformation, Weberian stratification theory as elucidated by Grusky (2008), and Sorokin’s (1959) theory of social mobility. This study utilizes a qualitative methodology to assess Mead's six novels: Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kiss, Blood Promise, Spirit Bound, and Last Sacrifice.

The research demonstrates that bodies within the series serve as a metaphor of social class, with class differentiation sustained through the internalization and enactment of roles based on access to technology, viewed in this context as a supernatural power only held by vampires. The relational dynamics among vampires, dhampirs, and humans exemplify a feudal system, positioning technologically advanced vampires at the pinnacle of the hierarchy. The characters' body transformation, namely the transition into Strigoi, is viewed as a manifestation of social mobility that functions externally to the feudal structure. Strigoi, characterized by their absence of ethical principles, symbolize opposition to the feudal structure and signify a profound deviation from traditional hierarchy. Mead's depiction of techno-feudalism critiques modern American society's reliance on technology, where ownership of technological resources equates to supremacy over sociopolitical values and conventions. The study concludes that VA critiques the rigidity of a nascent techno-feudal regime, which fights permeability and maintains strict, restrictive stratification patterns
