TRANSFORMASI LUKA BATIN MENUJU PEMULIHAN DIRI: ANALISIS INNER CHILD TOKOH UTAMA DALAM THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE KARYA NEIL GAIMAN

Penelitian ini membahas transformasi luka batin masa kecil (wounded inner child) menuju pemulihan diri (wounded inner child) yang dialami oleh tokoh utama dalam novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane karya Neil Gaiman. Fokus penelitian ini adalah menelaah manifestasi dari luka batin yang terbentuk dari pengalaman traumatis, dampaknya terhadap kehidupan personal dan sosial tokoh utama, serta proses pemulihan yang dialaminya. Teori inner child dari John Bradshaw (1990) digunakan sebagai kerangka utama untuk membedah dinamika psikologis tokoh, disertai dengan pendekatan psikologis sastra.

Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik analisis teks. Data utama bersalah dari novel yang dianalisis berdasarkan pengalaman traumatis dari tokoh , pengaruhnya terhadap identitas dan relasi sosial, serta penyembuhan luka batin yang digambarkan melalui perjalanan naratif tokoh utama. hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tokoh utama mengalami luka batin akibat pengabaian emosional, kekerasan psikologis, kesepian, dan ketiadaan figur yang melindungi dalam keluarga. Luka ini berpengaruh besar terhadap kepribadian dan hubungan sosialnya saat dewasa, seperti munculnya perasaan minder, ketidakmampuan mengekspresikan emosi, hingga kegagalan dalam hubungan sosial dan romantis. Proses transformasi menuju wonder inner child terjadi melalui beberapa tahap yaitu, kesadaran akan luka, grieving, reparenting, serta pemulihan faktor ego dengan dukungan Lettie Hempstock sebagai sosok figur dewi penyelamat. Penelitian ini menegaskan bahwa karya sastra dapat menjadi ruang reflektif untuk memahami proses penyembuhan luka batin serta membuka perspektif baru dalam kajian psikologi sastra.

This research explores the transformation of childhood emotional wounds (wounded inner child) towards self-healing (wonder inner child) as experienced by the main character in Neil Gaiman’s novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane. The study focuses on analyzing the manifestation of inner wounds caused by childhood traumas, their impacts on the character’s personal and social life, and the healing process portrayed in the narrative. John Bradshaw’s theory of the inner child serves as the primary framework, complemented by a literary psychological approach.

This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis techniques. The primary data source is the novel, examined for the character's traumatic experiences, the effects on his identity and social relations, and the stages of emotional recovery. The findings reveal that the main character suffers emotional wounds stemming from parental neglect, psychological abuse, loneliness, and the absence of protective figures during childhood. These wounds profoundly impact his adult life, resulting in low self-esteem, emotional suppression, and difficulties in social and romantic relationships. The transformation into the wonder inner child occurs through stages of awareness, grieving, reparenting, and the recovery of ego strength, assisted by the character Lettie Hempstock, who symbolizes a savior figure. This study highlights that literature provides a reflective space to understand emotional healing processes and offers new perspectives in literary psychology studies.
