This study examines the motives, reasons, and goals of crossdressers in Yogyakarta. In recent years, the phenomenon of crossdressing, the practice of wearing cross-gender clothing, has become increasingly prevalent in Indonesia, especially among cosplayers. Although it has been around for a long time, the emergence of crossdressers in public has become more visible after the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the increasing number of local cosplayers and pop culture events. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of researchers because crossdressing, which is considered deviant, has reasons, goals, and is influenced by the community or circle environment where the crossdresser is located.

This study uses Alfred Schutz's phenomenological theory to analyze the motives of crossdress cosplayers, which are divided into two categories: because of motive (background reasons) and in order to motive (goals to be achieved). The motives for the reasons include boredom with male characters, interest in female characters, past experiences, and entertainment reasons. While the motives for the goals include expressions of love for fictional characters, appreciation, stress relief, and personal pleasure. The experiences of the actors show that crossdress cosplay has emotional and social impacts, both positive and negative. This activity is not only for entertainment, but also as a complex form of self-expression, which is influenced by personal motivation and subjective meaning in each individual's life.
