The counterfeiting of pharmaceutical products poses a serious threat in many countries, including Indonesia, which has a high prevalence of such cases. One of the efforts made to suppress the circulation of counterfeit drugs is the implementation of 2D Barcode technology on drug packaging. This technology helps the public in identifying and verifying the authenticity of pharmaceutical products, while also enhancing the security of the drug distribution chain. This study aims to assess the level of public knowledge and perception in Indonesia regarding the use of 2D Barcodes as a tool to prevent pharmaceutical product counterfeiting.
This research is a quantitative descriptive study with a cross-sectional observational design, utilizing an online questionnaire adapted from previous studies and official regulations. The sampling method used was convenience sampling, involving 411 respondents aged 18 and above residing in Indonesia. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test to assess the relationships between variables.
The results showed that 346 respondents (84.18%) were aware of the existence of 2D Barcodes, while 236 respondents (57.42%) had never scanned a 2D Barcode on pharmaceutical products. Public knowledge was mostly in the low category (54.99%) with an average score of 6.93 (SD = 2), while public perception fell into the positive category (74.45%) with an average score of 28.73 (SD = 2.91). There was a significant relationship between gender (p = 0.004), age (p = 0.015), and education (p = 0.027) with the level of knowledge. Additionally, occupation was significantly associated with public perception of counterfeit drugs and the use of 2D Barcodes on pharmaceutical products (p = 0.002). Knowledge and perception also showed a significant correlation (p = 0.000), indicating that increased knowledge has the potential to improve public perception regarding the use of 2D Barcodes as a verification tool for drug authenticity.
