Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kompleksitas kejiwaan tokoh yang membentuk mereka menjadi tokoh neurotik dalam Novel Awan-awan di Atas Kepala Kita karya Miranda Malonka dengan berfokus pada pengaruh lingkungan sosial seperti yang dipaparkan Karon Horney dalam teorinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori Karen Horney, yaitu psikoanalisis sosial untuk menganalisis proses terbentuknya tokoh neurotik  agar mengetahui asal mula terbentuknya tokoh menjadi neurotik, lalu menganalisis aspek pembentuk tokoh neurotik yang memicu upaya bunuh diri, dan terakhir menganalisis upaya tokoh neurotik untuk dapat terlepas dari gangguan neurotiknya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan sumber data narasi dan dialog tokoh yang menggambarkan proses kejiwaan tokoh neurotik. Teknik pengumpulan data yaitu membaca, menyimak, dan mencatat dengan teknik analisis data, yaitu analisis deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lingkungan sosial para tokoh sangat berpengaruh dalam proses terbentuknya tokoh neurotik. Dalam proses terbentuknya tokoh neurotik, Ben dan Kay dipengaruhi oleh lingkungan keluarga dan pertemanan: pengaruh buruk lingkungan tersebut telah melahirkan kecemasan dasar yang semakin lama semakin menumpuk sedangkan Nat dipengaruhi lingkungan keluarga yang terlalu memanjakan. Aspek-aspek yang dijabarkan Horney dalam teorinya dapat ditemukan dalam ketiga tokoh kecuali Nat yang tidak mengalami fase penghancuran diri karena rasa bersalah yang dia rasakan bukan rasa bersalah neurotik. Upaya terlepas dari kecemasan dan gangguan neurotik dilakukan ketiga tokoh, yaitu: mendekati, menentang, dan menjauhi orang lain, serta analisis diri. Upaya tersebut telah berhasil membuat mereka terlepas dari gangguan neurotik.

This study aims to know the complexity of the characters' psyche that forms them into neurotic characters in the Novel Awan-awan di Atas Kepala Kita by Miranda Malonka by focusing on the influence of the social environment as explained by Karon Horney in her theory. This study uses Karen Horney's theory, namely social psychoanalysis to analyze the process of the formation of neurotic characters in order to find out the origin of the formation of neurotic characters, then analyze the aspects that form neurotic characters that trigger suicide attempts, and finally analyze the efforts of neurotic characters to be able to escape from their neurotic disorders. This study uses a qualitative method with data sources of narratives and character dialogues that describe the process of neurotic character psychology. Data collection techniques are reading, listening, and taking notes with data analysis techniques, namely descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that the social environment of the characters greatly influences the process of the formation of neurotic characters. In the process of the formation of neurotic characters, Ben and Kay are influenced by the family environment and friendships: the bad influence of the environment has given rise to basic anxiety that has accumulated over time, while Nat is influenced by a family environment that is too indulgent. The aspects described by Horney in her theory can be found in all three characters except Nat who did not experience a self-destructive phase because the guilt he felt was not neurotic guilt. The three characters made efforts to escape from anxiety and neurotic disorders, namely: approaching, opposing, and distancing themselves from others, as well as self-analysis. These efforts have succeeded in making them free from neurotic disorders.
