Performing in front of audiences is one of the main activities of musicians. However, this is often characterized by high levels of pressure to achieve maximum quality of performance and this may as a result increase music performance anxiety. Among several factors, perfectionism and social support has been identified as important predictors of music performance anxiety. Using a quantitative method, this research aims to explain the contribution of perfectionism and social support towards music performance anxiety. A number of 104 participants aged 18-25 were involved in this study by filling in a questionnaire consisting of three scales: Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (Revised), Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that perfectionism and social support significantly predicts music performance anxiety with a total effect size of 23.9% and a p-value of less than 0.05, which means the hypothesis was confirmed. Implications of this study may give further explanations about the risk factors for music performance anxiety.
