Exploration of Clinical Supervisors’ Opinion of Emergency Skills Training Program and Its Reformulated Program Outline For Preclinical Medical Students In Gadjah Mada University

Background: Preclinical students are nervous and lack of confidence when they enter the clerkship. Pilot study of emergency skills training in clinical settings for preclinical students was conducted in Gadjah Mada University. Objective: To explore clinical supervisors’ opinions about emergency skills training in clinical settings (Primary Health Care, Indonesian Red Cross, and teaching hospital) reformulated program outline in teaching hospital.and its Method: This was a descriptive study using two questionnaires. First questionnaire was clinical supervisors opinion exploration of emergency skills training in 3 clinical settings. Subjects were involved physicians from each settings. After data analysis, program outline was reformulated for the following year training in teaching hospital as the most feasible setting. Second questionnaire was then used to explore clinical supervisors’ opinion of the reformulated program outline. Subjects were physicians from hospital’s emergency room. Datas were analyzed using qualitative inductive content analysis. Result: For each questionnaire, 10 from 11 clinical supervisors completed the questionnaire (90,9%). First questionnaire exploration showed that emergency skills training was able to share knowledges with students and promote ER. Disadvantages were unmatched schedule and unprofessional students behaviour. Clinical supervisors suggested skills laboratory to reorganize the schedule and to prepare the students with orientation and practice. Second questionnaire exploration showed that the reformulated program outline will help students knowledge transfer and clerkship preparation. Disadvantages will be ER patients comfort disturbance and students skills limitation. Supervision will be needed to ensure patients comfort and safety. Conclusion: Emergency skills training program is beneficial for preclinical students’ clerkship preparation.
