This study
analyzes how the religiosity differences among American Christian women are
represented in the series Young Sheldon from seasons one to six and
reveals the discourse behind these differences. The analysis uses the
Post-Nationalist approach and Stuart Hall's representation theory, with two
approaches: reflective and constructionist. To explore how meaning is
constructed in the constructionist approach, the study applies Barthes'
semiotic theory and Foucault's concept of power and knowledge.
The results
of the study show that the religiosity of American Christian women is
represented through their relationship with God, as shown through religious
attitudes and actions, such as church attendance, prayer, and understanding of
God. Furthermore, women's religiosity is also represented through the
application of Christian values ??in the family and society, such as the role
in maintaining the family's faith and the application and maintenance of
Christian values ??in society. In contrast, the representation of women who are
not religious is shown to emphasize the image of religious women.
Based on the differences in women's religiosity from three different generations, Mary and Veronica are represented as religious women who show two main discourses. First, religious women accept and believe in the construction of women as the “church of the family”, which strengthens the subordination of women as supporters in the family and church. Similar structures are also passed down to the next generation, as happened to Generation X, who experienced gender subordination in the family, although not in the church. Second, the differences in religiosity show the trend of secularization and the growth of the group of non-religious people (nones) in American society, as represented by the Great, late Boomers, and X generations, influenced by modernity, knowledge, and media.
