Background: Stroke is a leading cause of disability and mortality worldwide. The glucose-to-potassium ratio (GPR) has been studied as a potential biomarker in various neurological conditions. However, its relationship with stroke severity and functional status in ischemic stroke patients remains underexplored. This study aims to evaluate the glucose-to-potassium ratio as a predictor of stroke severity and functional status in ischemic stroke patients at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta.
Methods: This study employed an analytical observational design with a retrospective cohort approach. Data were obtained from medical records of ischemic stroke patients treated at Dr. Sardjito General Hospital from January 2021 to December 2023. The analyzed variables included demographic, clinical, and laboratory data, as well as NIHSS and Barthel Index scores to assess stroke severity and functional status. Bivariate and multivariate statistical analyses were conducted.
Results: Among 540 analyzed patients, the mean age was 61.51 ± 12.94 years, with 54.1% male. The analysis showed that the glucose-to-potassium ratio positively correlated with stroke severity based on NIHSS (P<0>
Conclusions: The glucose-to-potassium ratio can serve as a predictor of stroke severity and functional status in ischemic stroke patients. These findings may provide a basis for utilizing GPR in the early management of ischemic stroke patients.
