How Do You Hide A Genocide?: Orientalism and The New York Times' Coverage on Israel's Genocidal Violence

This study aims to understand the mediation on the Palestinian genocide as conducted by The New York Times, particularly through understanding the politics of media coverage, the Times’ construction of Palestine as the Other, and how pro-Palestinian social movements put into question the persisting regime of truth. This thesis argues that Western media is bounded within the context of global imperialism, specifically in its meaning-making and money-making roles. The New York Times is a hegemonizing meaning-making platform that sets a standard for the public’s “common sense”. In creating meaning, The New York Times is bound to the ideology of the United States and its Zionist agenda, of which is exacerbated by the Times’ money-making means that benefit the Zionist entities in large positions of its ownership. This ideological and political-economic background thus establishes a structure of power that enables a distinct discourse on covering Israeli violence. Through the mechanism of Othering, the reiteration of Orientalist tropes, and dehistoricization, The New York Times is able to (re)present “good” and “evil” binaries in covering Israel-Palestine. However, this hegemonic narrative has ultimately been contested through counter-hegemonic efforts of social movements and alternative media, cracking down the Times’ regime of truth.
