The Role of Intrinsic Motivation on Work Engagement among Undergraduate Students during Internship Program

Kegiatan magang selama masa kuliah sarjana dikenal sebagai pendekatan pembelajaran umum yang memberikan perkembangan pribadi dan profesional dengan memperkenalkan mahasiswa pada situasi di dunia nyata. Namun, manfaat dari kegiatan magang dapat terhambat oleh kurangnya keterlibatan kerja sehingga mengurangi manfaat dari program tersebut. Keterlibatan kerja dipengaruhi oleh berbagai faktor termasuk motivasi intrinsic yang memenuhi kebutuhan dasar manusia. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi peran motivasi intrinsik dalam memengaruhi keterlibatan kerja di kalangan mahasiswa magang. Motivasi intrinsic merupakan variabel prediktor, sedangkan keterlibatan kerja adalah variabel terikat. Pendekatan kuantitatif dengan menggunakan kuesioner digital berdasarkan Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) dan Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9) diterapkan. Penelitian ini meliputi 143 partisipan yang merupakan mahasiswa sarjana asal Indonesia yang sedang mengikuti kegiatan magang. Regresi linier sederhana digunakan sebagai metode analisis utama. Ditemukan bahwa motivasi intrinsik secara signifikan berdampak positif terhadap keterlibatan kerja. Selain itu, ditemukan perbedaan antar rata-rata skor motivasi intrinsik dan keterlibatan kerja dalam kategori jenis kelamin, semester kuliah, dan durasi magang yang tidak signifikan.
Internship activities during undergraduate studies are widely recognized as a common learning approach, offering personal and professional development by exposing students to real-world situations. However, the benefits obtained from internships can be limited by a lack of work engagement, reducing the overall advantages of the program. Work engagement is influenced by various factors, including intrinsic motivation, which fulfils fundamental human needs. This study aims to explore the role of intrinsic motivation in influencing work engagement among undergraduate interns. Intrinsic motivation serves as the predictor variable, while work engagement is the dependent variable. A quantitative approach, utilizing a digital questionnaire based on the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9), was applied. The study involved 143 Indonesian undergraduates currently enrolled in internship programs. Simple linear regression was used as the primary method of analysis. Results revealed that intrinsic motivation has a significant positive effect on work engagement. Additionally, no significant differences were observed in intrinsic motivation or work engagement average scores in categories of gender, college semester, and internship duration.
