Discussing Ethical Issues and Posthumanism of 'Grain' Technology in Black Mirror Series "The Entire History of You": A Representation Analysis

Tesis ini menganalisis isu-isu etis dan konsep posthuman dalam penggambaran teknologi fiksi ‘Grain’ pada episode Black Mirror berjudul “The Entire History of You.” Teknologi ini, yang memungkinkan pengguna merekam dan memutar ulang memori mereka, menimbulkan pertanyaan mendalam mengenai otonomi, privasi, serta evolusi identitas manusia dalam realitas yang ditingkatkan secara teknologi. Dengan menggunakan Teori Representasi Stuart Hall dan konsep posthuman dari Rosi Braidotti, penelitian ini mengeksplorasi bagaimana teknologi ‘Grain’ menantang batasan konvensional tentang kemanusiaan, dan membayangkan masa depan di mana otonomi pribadi dan identitas sangat terkait dengan memori digital.

Analisis ini disusun dalam tiga kategori utama: faktor etis fisik, psikologis, dan sosial, yang masing-masing menyoroti potensi risiko yang ditimbulkan oleh teknologi brain-computer interface (BCI) seperti ‘Grain’, diantaranya keselamatan pengguna internal dan eksternal, otonomi pribadi, dan norma sosial. Melalui metode kualitatif dan pembacaan mendalam terhadap adegan serta dialog tertentu, tesis ini menekankan pentingnya kerangka kerja etis yang mengatasi antarmuka manusia-teknologi di era digital yang berkembang pesat. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa meskipun teknologi BCI menawarkan potensi peningkatan kognitif, teknologi ini juga membawa risiko yang dapat mengubah aspek-aspek mendasar kehidupan manusia, memperkuat relevansi kajian etis dan filosofis dalam integrasi teknologi tersebut.

This thesis critically examines the ethical issues and posthumanism embedded in the depiction of the fictional ‘Grain’ technology in the Black Mirror episode “The Entire History of You.” This technology, which enables users to record and replay their memories, raises profound questions concerning autonomy, privacy, and the evolution of human identity in a technologically augmented reality. Utilizing Stuart Hall's Representation Theory and Rosi Braidotti's concept of posthumanism, this study explores how ‘Grain’ technology challenges conventional boundaries of humanity, positing a future where personal autonomy and identity are deeply intertwined with digital memory.

The analysis is organized into three main categories: physical, psychological, and social ethical factors, each highlighting potential risks posed by brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies, like ‘Grain’. in areas such as internal and external user safety, personal autonomy, and societal norms. Through qualitative methods and a close reading of selected scenes and dialogues, this thesis underscores the necessity for ethical frameworks that address the human-technology interface in a rapidly advancing digital age. Findings suggest that while BCI technologies offer cognitive enhancement possibilities, they also carry risks that could alter fundamental aspects of human life, reinforcing the relevance of ethical and philosophical inquiry into the integration of such technologies
