Representasi Femininitas dalam Tokoh Harley Quinn di Film Suicide Squad, Bird of Prey dan The Suicide Squad

Penelitian ini menganalisis representasi karakter Harley Quinn dalam film-film produksi DC Extended Universe (DCEU) untuk mengeksplorasi sejauh mana karakter ini mencitrakan femininitas baru dalam konteks industri film superhero. Karakter Harley Quinn ditelaah sebagai simbol yang kompleks, di satu sisi menantang konvensi tradisional tentang gender dan perilaku perempuan, namun di sisi lain tetap terjebak dalam bingkai patriarki dan male gaze. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode analisis wacana kritis multimodal kineokonik yang memperhatikan bagaimana mode gambar bergerak, seperti ucapan, musik, aksi dramatis, bekerja sama dalam teks kineikonik, baik itu film, video, permainan video, atau animasi. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan ambivalensi dalam penggambaran karakter Harley Quinn. Harley Quinn tampak mewakili femininitas baru dengan menolak norma tradisional tentang penampilan dan perilaku perempuan. Gaya berpakaiannya yang berani dan cara bertarung yang tidak konvensional mencerminkan kebebasan ekspresi, namun kebebasan ini masih dibayangi oleh seksualisasi yang menempatkannya sebagai objek male gaze. representasinya tetap terperangkap dalam struktur patriarki di Hollywood, menjadikannya sebagai the other untuk kebutuhan narasi komersial. Karakter perempuan kuat seperti Harley Quinn sering kali dipertontonkan sebagai objek, bukan subjek otonom. Pada akhirnya, femininitas baru yang diusungnya lebih merupakan ilusi pemberdayaan yang dirancang untuk menarik penonton laki-laki daripada perubahan nyata dalam representasi perempuan.

This research analyzes the representation of the character Harley Quinn in the films produced by the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) to explore how far this character portrays a new femininity in the context of the superhero film industry. Harley Quinn character is examined as a complex symbol, on the one hand, she challenges traditional conventions about gender and female behavior, but on the other hand, she remains trapped in the frame of patriarchy and male gaze. This research uses kineoconic multimodal critical discourse analysis as a method, which pays attention to how modes of moving images, such as speech, music, dramatic action, work together in kineoconic texts, such as movies, videos, video games, or animations. This research reveals ambivalence in Harley Quinn's character portrayal. Harley Quinn appears to represent a new femininity by rejecting traditional norms about women's appearance and behavior. Her bold style of dress and unconventional way of fighting reflect freedom of expression, yet this freedom is still overshadowed by sexualization that places her as an object of male gaze. Her representation remains trapped within the patriarchal structure in Hollywood, making her as 'the other' for the needs of commercial narratives. Strong female characters like Harley Quinn are often presented as objects rather than autonomous subjects. Ultimately, the new femininity it promotes is more an illusion of empowerment designed to appeal to male audiences than a real change in the representation of women.
