Hasrat Konsumsi dan Kanibalisasi Kehidupan pada Mahasiswa Pekerja Paruh Waktu di Coffee Shop (Kasus Mahasiswa Universitas Gadjah Mada)

Pekerjaan paruh waktu menunjukkan peningkatan di pasar tenaga kerja modern dan menjadi tren baru, terutama di kalangan mahasiswa. Hal itu dikarenakan pekerjaan paruh waktu menawarkan fleksibilitas waktu sehingga mahasiswa dapat bekerja sambil kuliah. Ada berbagai macam pekerjaan paruh waktu yang dapat dipilih oleh mahasiswa, salah satunya sebagai pekerja di coffee shop. Coffee shop banyak dipilih karena memiliki ambience yang keren, nyaman, dan santai. Selain itu, adanya budaya ngopi pada kaum muda semakin mendorong mahasiswa untuk bekerja di tempat tersebut. Motivasi utama mahasiswa mengambil kerja paruh waktu adalah untuk mendapatkan penghasilan tambahan. Akan tetapi, penghasilan yang mereka dapat semata-mata untuk pemenuhan gaya hidup saja, bukan sebagai pemenuhan kebutuhan pokok. Sayangnya, hasrat tersebut menghadirkan risiko bagi mereka. Penelitian ini mencoba mengisi kekosongan kajian kritis mengenai hasrat konsumsi dan dinamika pekerja paruh waktu pada mahasiswa UGM. Metode fenomenologi digunakan untuk membedah pengalaman informan dalam praktik konsumsi dan pengalaman bekerja melalui teknik pengumpulan data wawancara, observasi, dan studi literatur. Pemilihan informan menggunakan teknik purposive. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori konsumerisme, teori alienasi, dan konsep kanibalisasi kehidupan sebagai pisau analisis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa praktik konsumsi mahasiswa bertujuan untuk mengekspresikan identitas sosial, mengikuti tren, dan membentuk distingsi sosial. Kemudian, keputusan bekerja paruh waktu yang mereka lakukan demi pemenuhan konsumsi tersebut mengorbankan waktu luang yang mereka miliki serta menghadapi keterasingan dari pekerjaan mereka.

Part-time jobs are rising in the modern labor market and are becoming a new trend, especially among university students. This is because part-time jobs offer time flexibility, so students can work while studying. There are various kinds of part-time jobs that students can choose from, one of which is working in a coffee shop. Coffee shops are selected because they have a cool, cozy, and relaxing ambiance. In addition, the coffee culture among young people encourages students to work in these places. The main motivation for students to take part-time jobs is to earn extra income. However, the income they earn is solely to fulfill their lifestyle, not to fulfill their basic needs. Unfortunately, this desire presents risks for them. This research fills the void of critical studies on the consumption desires and dynamics of part-time workers among UGM students. The phenomenological method is used to dissect informants' experiences in consumption practices and work experiences through the data collection techniques of interviews, observations, and literature studies. The selection of informants used a purposive technique. This research uses consumerism theory, alienation theory, and the concept of cannibalization of life as an analytical tool. The results show that students' consumption practices aim to express social identity, follow trends, and form social distinctions. Then, the decision to work part-time to fulfill their consumption sacrifices their leisure time and causes them to feel alienated from their work.
