Background: Blood pressure is one of the most frequently measured clinical parameters. One of the risk faktors for hypertension is obesity. The prevalence of obesity continues to increase in the world, including Indonesia. Apart from obesity, hypertension can also be caused by a high percentage of body fat. A simple way to measure it is by using anthropometric parameters including thigh circumference and body fat percentage.
Purpose: Knowing the relationship between thigh circumference and body fat percentage and blood pressure in students
Method: This study is cross-sectional study in 110 students. The subjects had their thigh circumference, bicep, triceps, subscapular, and suprailiac skinfold measured according to International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) method. Body fat percentage was calculated based on the Durnin and Womersley formula using bicep, tricep, subscapular, and suprailiac skinfolds. Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were measured using a sphygmomanometer. Pearson correlation and Chi-square were used to analyze the correlation between anthropometric measurements and blood pressure.
Result: Thigh circumference showed significant relationship to SBP in boys (r=0,35; p<0 r=0,25; p=0,01) r=0,33; p=0,001) r=0,30; p=0,001). r=0,12; p=0,001) r=0,16 p=0,001) r=0,13; p=0,001) r=0,27; p=0,001).>
Conclusion: There is significant relationship between thigh circumference and body fat percentage with SBP and DBP. Blood pressure correlates more strongly with thigh circumference than with BF%.
