ABSTRACT

This research examines the analysis of movie posters based on semiotics, specifically the theory proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce. Peirce's core concepts in analyzing the representamen, object, and interpretant and their meanings form the basis of this research. This research aims to identify the representamen, object, and interpretant in drama movie posters. There are three problem formulations to be answered, namely: (1) What are the representaments contained in the movie posters? (2) What are the objects contained in the movie posters? (3) What are the interpretants contained in the movie posters? This research uses a descriptive-qualitative approach that involves careful examination of each poster to identify and categorize the representamen, object, and interpretant depicted. The application of Peirce's semiotic theory and Avotins' theory on the meaning of color is crucial in the design of movie posters. The results show that although not all movie posters fully incorporate all nine aspects of Peirce's semiotic theory, movie posters effectively use signs to convey meaning, attract attention, and shape audience expectations and perceptions.
