The atomic bomb tragedy dropped on the city of Hiroshima during the World War II in 1945 left an indelible mark not only for the people of Hiroshima but also for the Japanese society due to its immense destructive impact at that time. Apart from museums, memories of the atomic bomb's fall on Hiroshima are manifested through the "Barefoot Gen" animation created by a survivor of the tragedy, Keiji Nakazawa, based on his childhood memories to depict what happened at that time. Essentially, in addition to commemorating and remembering the Hiroshima tragedy, "Barefoot Gen" carries messages of peace for its readers or viewers, which can be examined through scenes, such as dialogues and images within. To prevent similar incident in the future, the animation was disseminated outside of Japan as a preventive measure against war, especially the use of nuclear weapons, by depicting the devastating nuclear effects on the people and surroundings of Hiroshima.
This thesis will explain how the "Barefoot Gen" animation can reflect anti-war ideas and disseminated to the international community to change their perceptions of war. To begin with, this research will explain how the "Barefoot Gen" animation was formed after the tragedy in Hiroshima, which was the causality of the war that occurred at that time. After that, to elaborate further about the anti-war ideas contained within the animation, this research will focus on reviewing the dialogues and images through scenes within the "Barefoot Gen" film (1983) using the content analysis method.
