Geographical names are the identities possessed by each geographical feature on the earth's surface These names are not only considered as textual attributes, but also hold specific meanings that differentiate each region. Geographical names are a fundamental focus in toponymic studies, emphasizing spatial and linguistic aspects. These names have a history and origin that underlie how a certain area is formed. This is also evident in the city of Surakarta, which has a long history in the creation of names for each neighborhood. The influence of natural and cultural landscapes in the naming of geographical names is often encountered. Therefore, spatial analysis of geographical names and landscape aspects has the probability of revealing the characteristics of each region in Surakarta.
This research focuses on spatial and statistical analysis as part of an extensive approach to study geographical names in the city of Surakarta. The aspects of landscape used consist hydrography, land cover, and cultural features as the main factors for naming neighborhoods. In the analysis, geographical names need to be interpreted both denotatively and connotatively in order to classify them into various categories. Spatial analysis using overlay and distance approaches is conducted to examine the relationship between geographical names and lanscape aspects. Statistical testing is also performed to reinforce the established connections. Visualization is the final step, using story maps to depict these relationships narratively.
The analysis results indicate a correlation between geographical names and landscape aspects. The presence of geographical names related to hydrography indicates the existence of hydrographic features, especially rivers as references, around the neighborhood. Neighborhoods referring to land cover aspects explain how land utilization has been encountered or previously encountered. Meanwhile, the correlation between geographical names and cultural features is explained by the proximity in distance, referring to the presence of the Keraton Kasunanan Surakarta and Pura Mangkunegaran. This correlation is also depicted by the chi-square test, which has a larger value between the observed value (63,47) and the table value (24,996). The correlation between geographical names and landscape aspects can be disseminated through story maps, which can narratively depict spatial aspects by combining digital multimedia.
