The Ombilin coal mine in Sawahlunto, discovered in 1858 by Dutch geologists, significantly influenced the economy of West Sumatra during the Dutch colonial period. This research explores the economic impact of this mining activity, focusing on regional development. The study aims to provide insights into the links between economic activity and cultural landscapes that contribute to industrial archaeology and economic history. Methodologically, this research employs archaeological surveys, colonial-era maps, and literature reviews that integrate specific and contextual analysis to understand the broader economic impact of the mining operations. Findings indicate that the Ombilin coal mine transformed Sawahlunto into a major and influential mining city. The development of transportation infrastructure, including railways and ports, facilitated efficient coal exports and connected the local economy to global markets. This development spurred social and economic changes such as population growth and urban development. Technological advances in mining practices further supported the economic growth of the city and the broader regional economy.
