Parasocial Relationship Expressions on Social Media as an Exploration of Boys’ Love Fans’ Online Personal Identity: A Netnography of Indonesian Thai Boys' Love Fans’ Personal Identity on Twitter/X

There is a phenomenon in the Thai Boys’ Love (BL) fandom, where fans blur the on-screen pairing of fictional characters as the reality of the actors as a romantic pairing by using Twitter/X to express their attraction to their favorite actors and discuss with other fans their similar interests. The BL genre has also been recognized as an exploration of eroticism and identity that indicates the power of BL as a safe community to exercise power and agency in the expression of gender identities. Seeing how there is a rising trend of people utilizing social media to form parasocial relationships as a way to cope with their unfulfilled social needs, Twitter/X may serve as a place to facilitate fans with the opportunity to fulfill their needs of expression and personal identity exploration. Using netnography to immerse in the fans' space in 2023, this research aims to understand how Thai BL fans express their fan-idol connection by examining the concept of parasocial relationships that are manifested in the tweets produced by the fans to explore their personal identity. It was found that fan accounts are used as a form of performance of the fans’ personal identity while serving as a space to express parasocial relationships that are publicly shown for other fans to see and confirm their personal identity.

Terdapat suatu fenomena dalam fandom Thai Boys' Love (BL), dimana para penggemar melihat pasangan karakter fiksi di layar televisi sebagai realita daru para aktor sebagai pasangan romantis yang sebenarnya, dengan menggunakan Twitter/X untuk mengekspresikan ketertarikan mereka kepada aktor favoritnya dan berdiskusi dengan penggemar lain yang memiliki minat serupa. Genre BL juga dikenal sebagai eksplorasi erotisme dan identitas yang menunjukkan kekuatan BL sebagai komunitas yang aman untuk menjalankan kekuasaan dan agensi dalam ekspresi identitas gender. Melihat peningkatan tren orang-orang yang memanfaatkan media sosial untuk membentuk hubungan parasosial sebagai cara untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sosial mereka yang tidak terpenuhi di dunia nyata, Twitter/X dapat menjadi tempat untuk memfasilitasi penggemar dengan kesempatan untuk memenuhi kebutuhan ekspresi dan eksplorasi identitas pribadi mereka. Riset ini menggunakan netnografi untuk masuk kedalam ruang penggemar pada tahun 2023, bertujuan untuk memahami bagaimana penggemar BL Thailand mengekspresikan hubungan penggemar-idola mereka dengan mengkaji konsep hubungan parasosial yang diwujudkan dalam tweet yang dihasilkan oleh para penggemar untuk mengeksplorasi identitas pribadi mereka. Ditemukan bahwa akun penggemar digunakan sebagai bentuk pertunjukan identitas pribadi penggemar sekaligus berfungsi sebagai ruang untuk mengekspresikan hubungan parasosial yang diperlihatkan secara publik kepada penggemar lain untuk melihat dan mengonfirmasi identitas pribadi mereka.
