Background: Dyslipidemia is a medical condition characterized by abnormalities in blood lipid levels. Dyslipidemia can occur when total cholesterol, LDL, or triglycerides are too high, or HDL levels are too low. Central obesity and physical activity are associated with an increased risk of dyslipidemia. The rising prevalence of dyslipidemia among employees of Universitas Gadjah Mada has become a focal point of research to develop prevention strategies.
Objective: To determine the relationship between central obesity, physical activity, and the occurrence of dyslipidemia.
Method: This study used a cross-sectional study design at Gadjah Mada Medical Center from July to December 2023. A total of 215 subjects meeting inclusion criteria were assessed for central obesity based on waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and visceral fat. Data analysis utilized Chi-Square tests to explore relationships between variables with significance set at <0>
Results: The prevalence of dyslipidemia among study subjects was 91.6%. Chi-Square analysis indicated no significant relationship between the occurrence of dyslipidemia and central obesity based on waist circumference (0.790), waist-to-hip ratio (0.545), visceral fat (0.076), or physical activity (0.209). However, a significant relationship was found between gender and the occurrence of dyslipidemia (p=0.04).
Conclusion: There is no association between central obesity (based on waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and visceral fat) and physical activity with the occurrence of dyslipidemia. However, there is a relationship between gender and the occurrence of dyslipidemia.
