The success of development is influenced by the dynamics and conditions of the population, one of which is characterized by demographic indicators such as the total fertility rate and infant mortality rate. To understand the information within population dynamics, a comprehensive study supported by optimal data visualization is needed. This visualization should not only present data effectively but also help derive new information, such as the distribution or spatial patterns of the data, which can serve as a basis for decision-making in planning and evaluation. Spatial data visualization, or geovisualization, has evolved to not only present a single variable in a univariate choropleth map but also to display two variables simultaneously in a bivariate choropleth map. However, this new method of geovisualization is still rarely used in Indonesia. Therefore, this research aims to present data on the total fertility rate and infant mortality rate per regency/city in Java Island in 2020 using univariate choropleth maps and bivariate choropleth maps, and to conduct usability testing on these geovisualization results to determine the best method for visualizing total fertility rate and infant mortality rate data.
This research utilizes spatial data in the form of administrative boundaries of regencies/cities in the six provinces of Java Island, and non-spatial data in the form of statistical data on the total fertility rate (TFR) and infant mortality rate (IMR) per regency/city in the six provinces of Java Island in 2020, based on the 2020 Population Census by the Central Bureau of Statistics. Geovisualization is conducted using the univariate choropleth and bivariate choropleth corners focal model methods. The usability testing method used is a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods through questionnaire and interview techniques.
The results of this study indicate that the presentation of data on the total fertility rate and infant mortality rate per regency/city in Java Island in 2020 can be effectively carried out using the univariate choropleth and bivariate choropleth corners focal model methods. Based on the results of usability testing, the best method for presenting Total Fertility Rate (TFR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) data by regency/city in Java, in terms of ease of understanding, is the univariate choropleth method. However, when considering user preference for more visually appealing maps and preferred map aspects for content representation, the bivariate choropleth corners focal model method is preferred.
