KONSTRUKSI RUANG-RUANG EKSEPSI DAN POLITISASI SUBJEKSUBJEK HOMO SACER DALAM NOVEL THE BOYS FROM BILOXI KARYA JOHN GRISHAM

Kajian ini mempersoalkan strategi negara dan masyarakat 

mengkonstruksi ruang-ruang eksepsi serta politisasi subjek-subjek homo sacer

dalam novel The Boys from Biloxi (TBfB) karya John Grisham. Novel TBfB 

bercerita tentang Negara Bagian Mississippi khususnya kota Biloxi yang 

mengkriminalisasi legalitas. Tatanan sosial dalam kota Biloxi didominasi oleh 

kelompok dan subjek mafia dan berbagai bentuk aktivitas ilegal yang 

dilegalkan seperti perjudian, penjualan obat-obatan terlarang, prostitusi, 

korupsi, dan sebagainya. Giorgio Agamben sebagai pemikir postmarxism

melihat paradoks kekuasaan tertinggi melalui keadaan eksepsi dan keadaan 

kebutuhan dalam suatu negara serta adanya politisasi dari figur-figur homo 

sacer. Poros penelitian ini adalah untuk membongkar kedaulatan negara dan 

kedudukan masyarakat Mississippi dalam konstruksi ruang-ruang ekspsesi dan 

mengidentifikasi strategi masyarakat dan negara Mississippi berhadapan 

dengan politisasi subjek-subjek homo sacer. Metode penelitian dilakukan 

dengan beberapa tahapan, yaitu pengumpulan data dengan mengumpulkan 

data-data sesuai dengan rumusan masalah dan mengkategorikan data-data yang 

penting terkait dengan objek formal yang digunakan. Kemudian, penelitian ini 

mengklasifikasikan data berdasarkan teks pada novel yang memiliki relevansi 

terhadap kekuasaan tertinggi, keadaan eksepsi, homo sacer, dan keadaan 

kebutuhan, dan ditinggalkan (abandonment). Selanjutnya, tahap analisis data 

yaitu peneliti akan menghubungkan data satu dengan data yang lainnya. Hasil 

penelitian ini adalah kekuasaan negara memiliki kapabilitas untuk 

mengkonstruksi ruang-ruang eksepsi melalui keadaan eksepsi dan keadaan 

kebutuhan melalui kriminalisasi legalitas diberbagai area publik. Masyarakat 

juga berstrategi memanfaatkan ruang eksepsi tersebut dengan cara melakukan 

penyuapan terhadap institusi penegak hukum, militer, ruang pengadilan, 

aparatus, dan mengkonstruksi arena pertarungan antara mafia dan pemerintah. 

Tindakan masyarakat mempolitisasi dengan menginklusi dan mengeksklusi 

subjek-subjek homo sacer sesuai kepentingan pribadi bersama subjek-subjek 

bios lainnya. Subjek-subjek homo sacer mempolitisasi dan mereduksi dirinya 

sendiri tanpa paksaan apapun. Di sisi lain, Negara Bagian Mississippi memiliki 

kapasitas dalam mempolitisasi subjek-subjek homo sacer melalui strategi

abandonment (ditelantarkan) oleh hukum secara permanen dan melalui seorang 

jaksa agung yang menggunakan hak vitae necisque potestas (politisasi atas 

kehidupan dan kematian).

ABSTRACT

This study questions the strategies of the state and society in 

constructing spaces of exception and politicization of homo sacer subjects in 

the novel The Boys from Biloxi (TBfB) written by John Grisham. The novel 

TBfB tells about the State of Mississippi, especially the city of Biloxi, which 

criminalizes legality. The social order in the city of Biloxi is dominated by 

groups and subjects of mafia and various forms of legalized illegal activities 

such as gambling, drug sales, prostitution, corruption, and so on. Giorgio 

Agamben as a postmarxism expert sees the paradox of supreme power through 

the state of exception and the state of necessity in a country and the 

politicization of homo sacer figures. The gap of this research is to dismantle 

the sovereignty of the state and the role of Mississippi society in the 

construction of spaces of exception and identify the strategies of Mississippi 

society and state towards the politicization of homo sacer subjects. The 

research method is carried out in several stages, which are data collection by 

collecting data in accordance with the formulation of the problem and 

categorizes the important data related to the formal object used. Then, 

classifying the data based on the text in the novel that has relevance to the 

supreme power, the state of exception, homo sacer, and the state of necessity, 

and abandonment. Furthermore, the data analysis stage is where researchers 

will connect one data with other data. The result of this research is that state 

power has the capability to construct exception spaces through state of 

exception and necessity through the criminalization of legality in various public 

areas. The community also strategizes to utilize the exception spaces by bribing 

law enforcement institutions, military, courtroom, apparatus, and constructing 

a battle arena between the mafia and the government. The society take actions 

to politicize by including and excluding homo sacer subjects according to 

personal interests with other bios subjects. Homo sacer subjects politicize and 

reduce themselves without any force. On the other hand, the State of Mississippi 

has sovereign to politicize homo sacer subjects through abandonment 

strategies and through an attorney general who uses the right vitae necisque 

potestas.
