As a Man Thinketh: Studi Wacana Kritis Van Dijk atas Reformulasi Maskulinitas Hegemonik dalam buku The Rational Male karya Rollo Tomassi

Latar Belakang: Perkembangan feminisme dalam peradaban barat telah menjadikan banyak kesenjangan dalam interaksi dinamika antar-gender. Hal ini mengakibatkan munculnya berbagai komunitas reaksioner seperti MRA, MGTOW, Incel, dan PUA. Komunitas-komunitas tersebut berkongsi dalam "Manosphere," Berbasis dalam berbagai platform media-baru internet, komunitas-komunitas tersebut dapat memanfaatkan anonimitas yang ditawarkan internet untuk mereproduksi perspektif anti-feminisme mereka. Salah satu pondasi filosofis dalam Manosphere adalah ideologi The Red Pill. Ideologi tersebut dialegorikan sebagai jawaban realistis atas delusi yang dialami oleh masyarakat barat. Sebagian besar reformulasi ideologi tersebut terdapat dalam buku The Rational Male karya Rollo Tomassi. Dengan menggunakan pisau analisis Gramscian maskulinitas hegemonis dan maskulinitas toksik, penelitian ini berupaya mengkaji wacana maskulinitas yang direformulasikan dalam buku tersebut.

Metode: Penelitian ini dilaksanakan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Pendekatan analisis wacana kritis model Van Dijk digunakan untuk membongkar wacana dan kesenjangan kekuasaan. Model ini memiliki tiga dimensi analisis. Pertama, analisis teks dan struktur teks. Pada dimensi ini, Wacana dilihat dari bagaimana teks disajikan oleh penulis. Mulai dari diksi, struktur penulisan, hingga topik yang disajikan penulis dalam teks. Analisis ini akan dilakukan langsung terhadap buku The Rational Male. Kedua, analisis koginisi sosial. Pada dimensi ini, wacana dilihat dari bagaimana penulis mereformulasi diskursus yang dialami penulis dan ikut disajikan dalam tulisan yang dibuatnya. Analisis ini akan dilakukan langsung terhadap buku The Rational Male dengan melihat perspektif penulis atas fenomena sosial dimana ia berada. Ketiga, analisis konteks sosial, Pada dimensi ini, wacana dilihat dari bagaimana suatu kelompok dimana suatu tulisan berada menafsirkan tulisan tersebut. Analisis ini akan dilaksanakan secara terbatas pada laman forum trp.red (https://trp.red) dan subreddit TheRedPill (https://reddit.com/r/TheRedPill).

Hasil: Melalui pemeriksaan mendalam terhadap analisa teks dan struktur teks, peneliti mengungkap penggunaan jargon dan truisms secara strategis, yang digunakan untuk menyampaikan dan memperkuat gagasan-gagasan tertentu seputar maskulinitas, hubungan, dan dinamika gender. Dengan menjelajahi dimensi sosio-kognitif, peneliti mengungkap bagaimana buku ini secara efektif mereformulasi ideologi komunitas "Red Pill," menjadi teks kunci yang membentuk dan memengaruhi persepsi dan perilaku pembacanya. Dalam konteks dimensi sosial, peneliti menemukan bahwa "The Rational Male" muncul sebagai respon terhadap gerakan feminis dan krisis maskulinitas di kalangan pria, berada dalam posisi reaksioner dalam perubahan lanskap hubungan gender. Dengan analisis teoritis, peneliti juga mengungkapkan bahwa buku ini mempromosikan genre tertentu dari maskulinitas yang erat kaitannya dengan ideal-ideal hegemonik sambil secara bersamaan mendukung pendekatan terhadap kehidupan yang berakar dalam maskulinitas beracun. Penelitian ini berfungsi sebagai eksplorasi penting tentang permainan kompleks antara teks, ideologi, dan konteks sosial-budaya dalam pembentukan maskulinitas kontemporer dalam buku The Rational Male.

Kesimpulan: Berkembangnya feminisme di barat tidak berkembang dengan tanpa perlawanan. Terdapat banyak gerakan reaksioner yang melawan feminisme. termasuk diantaranya adalah ideologi The Red Pill atau Maskulinitias Positif yang di sampaikan oleh Rollo. Dengan berbagai krisis maskulinitas dan problematika yang dihadapi oleh pria barat, posisi-posisi oposan-reaksioner menjadi pelarian mereka dari rasa kekurangan mereka atas diri mereka.

Background: The development of feminism in Western civilization has resulted in significant gaps in the dynamics of gender interactions. Consequently, various reactionary communities have emerged, such as MRA (Men's Rights Activists), MGTOW (Men Going Their Own Way), Incel (Involuntary Celibates), and PUA (Pick-Up Artists). These communities share common ground within the "Manosphere," an online-based conglomeration of multiple new-media communication platforms that leverages internet anonymity to reproduce their anti-feminist perspectives. A fundamental philosophical foundation within the Manosphere is the ideology of "The Red Pill." This ideology is allegorized as a realistic awakening to the delusions that are perceived have engulfed Western society. A significant part of this ideological reformulation is presented in the book "The Rational Male" by Rollo Tomassi. Using a Gramscian analytical framework of hegemonic masculinity and toxic masculinity, this research aims to examine the discourse on masculinity as reformulated within the said book.

Method: This research was conducted using a qualitative method. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis model was employed to deconstruct discourses and power gaps. This model comprises three dimensions of analysis. Firstly, the analysis focuses on the text and its structure. In this dimension, discourses are examined based on how the author presents the text, including diction, writing structure, and the topics addressed in the text. This dimension of analysis will be directly applied to the book "The Rational Male." Secondly, the analysis delves into social cognition. In this dimension, discourses are viewed from how the author reinterprets the discourses occurring within their written work. The analysis will be directly applied to the book "The Rational Male," looking at the author's perspective on the social phenomena in which they are involved. Lastly, the analysis examines the social context. In this dimension, discourses are analyzed based on how a particular group interprets the given written work. This analysis will be conducted on the webpages of, although with some limits, the [[https://trp.red][trp.red]] forum and the subreddit "TheRedPill" (https://reddit.com/r/TheRedPill][TheRedPill).

Result: This research presents a critical discourse analysis of Rollo Tomassi's influential work, "The Rational Male." Through an in-depth examination of the text structure, we unveil the strategic use of jargon and truisms, employed to convey and reinforce specific ideas surrounding masculinity, relationships, and gender dynamics. By delving into the socio-cognitive dimension, we unearth how the book effectively reformulates the ideology of the "Red Pill" community, becoming a pivotal text that shapes and influences its readers' perceptions and behaviors. In the context of the social dimension, we uncover that "The Rational Male" emerges as a response to the feminist movement and the crisis of masculinity among men, positioned as a reactionary stance within the shifting landscape of gender relations. Our analysis further reveals that, paradoxically, the book promotes a specific genre of masculinity closely aligned with hegemonic ideals while simultaneously endorsing an approach to life rooted in toxic masculinity. This thesis serves as a vital exploration of the complex interplay between text, ideology, and sociocultural context in the shaping of contemporary masculinity.

Conclusion: The development of feminism in the West has not gone unchallenged. There were many reactionary movements against feminism, including Rollo's Red Pill or Positive Masculinity ideology. With the various crises of masculinity and problems faced by Western men, oppositional-reactionary positions became their escape from a sense of self-deficiency.
