Syllable Cueing Pada Kondisi Tip of the Tongue Pembelajar English as Foreign Language

Tesis ini mengkaji bagaimana syllable cueing memainkan peran dalam kondisi Tip of the Tongue para pembelajar EFL di Kampung Inggris Pare. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode eksperimental melalui tiga tahap pemberian stimulus secara berurutan, di antaranya stimulus definisi kata, stimulus kata alternatif, dan stimulus first syllable cues. Sejumlah 29 pembelajar yang terdiri dari mahasiswa dirancang untuk mengingat 10 kata target bahasa Inggris dalam waktu 50 detik pada setiap fase. Analisis dilakukan melalui cara kuantitatif dan kualitatif pada respon yang berhasil dikumpulkan, yakni berupa fitur generic recall. Ditemukan bahwa data generic recall berupa huruf sebanyak 13%, suku kata 6%, dan kata 81%. Uji chi-square dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh syllable cues terhadap resolusi ToT dengan bantuan aplikasi IBM SPSS versi 22. Uji chi-square tersebut menyatakan bahwa terdapat pengaruh pemberian stimulus syllable cues dalam kondisi Tip of the Tongue para pembelajar EFL di Kampung Inggris Pare. Pengaruh tersebut sebesar 0,032 pada stimulus 2 dan 0,005 pada stimulus 3. Selanjutnya, analisis data dilanjutkan secara kualitatif berdasarkan pada data statistika yang dilengkapi dengan data sekunder hasil wawancara. Analisis kualitatif menghasilkan penjelasan mengenai 7 peran penting syllable cues. Penelitian ini juga mendeteksi adanya 4 temuan baru, antara lain 1) potensi gangguan ToT terkait dengan aspek penerjemahan, 2) pemberian stimulus first syllable cues setelah kata alternatif dinilai kurang tepat, 3) first syllable cues lebih sukses dalam mengatasi ToT daripada kata alternatif, dan 4) resolusi ToT berkaitan erat dengan frekuensi, bukan dengan tekanan atau stressing kata. Temuan-temuan ini menunjukkan besarnya peran stimulus syllable cues dalam memfasilitasi akses leksikal para pembelajar EFL dalam kondisi ToT.

This thesis examines how syllable cueing plays a role in Tip of the Tongue (ToT) conditions for EFL learners in Kampung Inggris Pare. The research employed an experimental method through three consecutive stimulus delivery stages. Those are definition word stimuli, alternative word stimuli, and first syllable cues stimuli. As many as 29 college students were assigned to recall 10 English words within 50 seconds in each phase. The analysis underwent quantitative and qualitative methods on the successfully collected responses in the form of generic recall features. It found that the data on generic recall consisted of letters (13%), syllables (6%), and words (81%). Chi-square tests determine the influence of syllable cues on ToT resolution with the assistance of IBM SPSS version 22. The chi-square test indicated there are influences of syllable cues stimuli in Tip of the Tongue conditions for EFL learners in Kampung Inggris Pare. The influence is 0.032 for stimulus 2 and 0.005 for stimulus 3. Next, data analysis continued qualitatively based on statistical data supplemented with secondary data from interviews. The qualitative yielded explanations regarding seven crucial roles of syllable cues. The research also identified four new findings, including 1) the potential disruption of ToT related to the translation aspect, 2) the delivery of first syllable cues after alternative words are considered less appropriate, 3) first syllable cues are more successful in overcoming ToT than alternative words, and 4) ToT resolution is closely related to frequency, not to the stress of words. These findings demonstrate the significant role of syllable cueing stimuli in facilitating lexical access for EFL learners in ToT conditions.
