A Psychoanalytic Reading on Melancholia in Orhan Pamuk’s Snow

Skripsi ini menganalisis Snow (2004) karya Orhan Pamuk. Tesis ini menerapkan penelitian fundamental dari Freud tentang melankolia beserta pendapat dan studi terbaru para psikoanalisis. Novel ini meneliti perjalanan yang dilakukan oleh tokoh utama Ka selama tiga hari di kota Kars. Tujuan dari tesis ini adalah untuk menghubungkan perjalanan Ka dengan teori psikoanalisis tentang melankolia dan hubungan melankolia dengan elemen-elemen sosio-politik mengenai Turki dalam novel Snow. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat unsur melankolia yang jelas dan terhubung di sepanjang novel Snow. Hal ini terlihat dari cara berbagai tokoh masyarakat dalam novel Snow menunjukkan karakteristik melankolia mulai dari kesedihan yang tak terselesaikan, perilaku merusak diri sendiri, ambivalensi, serta kecenderungan terhadap mania. Selain itu, karakteristik melankolia ditunjukkan secara sosio-politis di sepanjang novel, terbukti dari keterkaitan antara bagaimana narator berperan sebagai suara otoritatif Pamuk, motivasi para perempuan yang bunuh diri, dan kudeta teatrikal yang dijalankan Sunay Zaim.

This undergraduate thesis analyzes Orhan Pamuk’s Snow (2004). This thesis applies Freud’s foundational research into melancholia as well as contemporary psychoanalysts’ commentaries and updated studies. The novel explores the journey that the protagonist, Ka, undertook over the course of three days in the city of Kars. The objective of this thesis is to connect Ka’s journey with the psychoanalytic theory of melancholia and the connections of melancholia with the sociopolitical elements in Snow from Pamuk’s perspective towards Turkey. The result of this study shows that there is a clear and connected element of melancholia throughout Snow. This result is seen from the way the characters and society in Snow exhibits the characteristics of melancholia from unresolved grief, self-destructive behaviors, ambivalence, as well as tendencies towards mania. Furthermore, these characteristics are exhibited in a sociopolitical manner throughout Snow, evidenced from the interrelation of how the narrator is an authorial surrogate to Pamuk himself, the motivations of the suicide girls, and the theatre coup of Sunay Zaim.
