The rapid developments experienced by the Jakarta and Bandung in the early 1970s affected the high mobility of the people due to their close proximity. PNKA then operated the Parahyangan Train as one of the public transportation options connecting the two regions. As a result, the Parahyangan Train has managed to dominate its line for nearly four decades of operation. During its operation, the Parahyangan Train became the daily transportation for various groups of people to travel between Jakarta and Bandung.
Therefore, this research seeks to describe the development of the Parahyangan Train as the people's daily commuter transportation and why each of them chose to use the Parahyangan Train as their primary choice. This research uses primary and secondary sources. The primary sources used include the archives of PT. KAI, BPS, newspaper articles, photos and interviews. Secondary sources used include books, theses, magazine articles, Youtube videos, and other sources that are considered credible.
Parahyangan Train can be categorized as a commuter train. This argument is strengthened by the departure schedule, the number of passengers, and the stories of the passengers. Dominated by workers, merchants, and students on weekdays and families on weekends, the Parahyangan Train acts as a commuter transport and long-distance train simultaneously. Unfortunately, the operation of the Cipularang Toll Road in 2005 forced the Parahyangan Train to recognize the superiority and effectiveness of road transportation. PT KA's constant losses led to the merger of the Parahyangan Train with the Argo Gede Train into the Argo Parahyangan Train in 2010 and marked a new era of Jakarta-Bandung commuter transportation with the surrounding sub-urban areas.
