The city of Pontianak is formed around the Kapuas River, which splits into two rivers: the Kapuas Kecil River and the Landak River, symbolized by the city's logo. In the past, the center of civilization in this city was located along the riverbanks, with building orientations and forms influenced by the rivers and canals within it. Pontianak is also known as the "city of a thousand canals" a colonial designation due to the thousands of canals throughout the city. Over time, with the advancement of technology, including transportation modes, the community's orientation gradually shifted from being heavily dependent on water to a land-based focus. This shift has led to Pontianak no longer being fully oriented toward canals and rivers, and has resulted in the disappearance and reduction of canals due to road expansion. Therefore, there is a need for a study to examine the forms of canal-edge corridors through typology studies. This research aims to explore the diversity of canal-edge corridor typologies in Pontianak by using a synchronic method that compares the findings of one form with the findings of others through the study of four canals in the city. The results of this study provide an elaboration of the various typologies of canal-edge corridors found in Pontianak, along with a formulated map of these typologies. This map serves to measure the extent of the current characteristics of the canals and the factors contributing to the typologies of canal corridors in Pontianak. The findings of this study can be beneficial for the Pontianak municipal government in formulating regulations for the management of canal-edge spaces to support the development concept of a "waterfront city" along the canal corridors of Pontianak. This research also contributes to the urban design field by enhancing the insights and knowledge of readers regarding the typologies of canal-edge corridors in Pontianak. Additionally, this research serves as a reference for other canal-oriented cities in Indonesia and abroad, concerning the typologies of canal, river, water, and canal city corridors.
