Fake news grows rapidly and widely since everyone can publish news through the internet easily. Many studies have been conducted on the ability to identify fake news in terms of various factors. However, people’s behavior around identifying and verifying fake news across different types of topic news has not been studied. This study aims to discuss the relationship between people’s verification behavior and verification activities on the ability to identify fake news. Moreover, this study also analyze differences in the ability to identify fake news across different topics, including politics, technology, health, and lifestyle. The research was conducted on 77 students at Universitas Gadjah Mada using a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. There are three stages in the experimental process, including self-report for verification behavior, fake news identification without verification, and fake news identification by verification. The ability to identify fake news is measured using signal detection theory by calculating sensitivity scores or awareness and response bias scores. Results show a significant correlation between the ability to identify fake news and specific verification strategies (rs(75)= 0,236 ; p = 0,039). A deeper analysis of the experiment shows that verification activities have a significant effect on increasing the ability to identify fake news (Z = -5,342 ; p < 0>. Furthermore, deeper analysis shows that news topics have a significant effect on the ability to identify fake news after the respondent verifies (?2(3) = 24,053 ; p < 0 lang="EN-US" xss="removed">. This study contributes to the understanding not only of the ability students to identify fake news but also of specific verification behavior to have a high awareness of fake news. Pesatnya perkembangan teknologi
one-group pretest-posttest design. Terdapat tiga tahapan dalam proses eksperimen, yaitu
kuesioner self-report kebiasaan verifikasi berita, identifikasi fake
peningkatan kemampuan identifikasi fake news (Z = -5,342 ; p < 0>. Selanjutnya analisis lebih dalam menunjukkan bahwa
topik berita memiliki pengaruh terhadap kemampuan identifikasi fake news
setelah responden melakukan verifikasi (?2(3) = 24,053 ; p < 0 lang="EN-US" xss="removed">. Hasil dari penelitian memiliki implikasi untuk
Gen Z, portal web berita, serta pemerintahan.
