This study investigates the effect of the presence of female finance directors and females on supervisory boards on the timeliness of loan loss provisions (LLPs) recognition in banking institutions located in the Southeast Asian region. Females often experience relatively low representation in banking leadership roles. This is due to the majority of Asian societies' views on females who are perceived to be more dominant in domestic sector activities, compared to their roles in the public sector. The sample used in this study includes 306 bank-years in the Southeast Asian region during 2015-2020.
The results of this study find that banks led by female finance directors show timelier recognition of LLPs, suggesting that the banks implement the transparency principle. In addition, the findings also prove that the presence of females on the supervisory boards positively affects the relationship between female finance directors and the timeliness of LLPs recognition. The overall findings focus on the importance of the role of females in banking leadership, mainly in establishing transparent financial reporting through the implementation of ethical values and risk aversion traits that appear as innate biological advantages possessed by every female.
