Representasi Kepmimpinan Politik Presiden Amerika Serikat Dalam Film-Film Biografi Presiden Produksi Hollywood

Keberadaan presiden dalam sistem pemerintahan presidensial merupakan hal yang sangat penting dalam kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara. Hal ini karena kedudukan presiden adalah sebagai kepala negara sekaligus kepala pemerintahan. Amerika Serikat merupakan pencetus awal sistem presidensialisme sehingga kehadiran dan kiprah presiden-presiden Amerika Serikat menarik untuk dikaji dan diteliti. Bila selama ini kajian tersebut banyak dilakukan dari perspektif hukum dan politik, maka penelitian ini menggunakan perspektif studi film, khususnya film biografi (biopic). Penelitian ini mendalami tentang kepemimpinan politik presiden yang direpresentasikan di dalam empat film biografi presiden Amerika Serikat, sehingga dari representasi tersebut bisa diperoleh gambaran bagaimana kepemimpinan presiden dimaknai dan dikonstruksi. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif yang mengeksplorasi data primer berupa unsur naratif dan sinematografi film biografi dan data sekunder yang berasal dari berbagai referensi pendukung lainnya yang membantu pemaknaan representasi. Obyek penelitian berupa film-film biografi presiden yang narasinya di saat mereka sedang dalam posisi memimpin sebagai presiden, yakni film biografi Lincoln (2012), film biografi Wilson (1944), film biografi LBJ (2017) dan film biografi Nixon (1995). Selanjutnya, penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma myth and symbol dalam Pengkajian Amerika dan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes untuk menelaah representasi kepemimpinan politik presiden yang muncul dalam film-film biografi tersebut. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan dua hal. Pertama, representasi kepemimpinan politik presiden yang muncul meliputi 1).kepemimpinan yang mengelaborasi visi kebangsaan, 2). kepemimpinan yang negosiatif dan manipulatif, 3). kepemimpinan yang persuasif, dan 4). kepemimpinan yang terkait dengan kecerdasan emosi. Kedua, konstruksi kepemimpinan politik dalam film biografi presiden meliputi 1). kuatnya pengaruh dari pembuat film dan dinamika situasi sosial politik yang melingkupi kelahiran film tersebut dan 2). mengkonstruksi pesan mengenai kepemimpinan yang heroik, kepemimpinan yang demokratis dan kepemimpinan yang melibatkan keluarga. Pada akhirnya, penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa film biografi presiden mengkonfirmasi berjalannya sistem pemerintahan presidensialisme yang meletakkan kekuasaan lebih kuat pada presiden, namun menegasikan berjalannya prinsip check and balances yang menjadi prinsip pemerintahan demokratis.

The existence of the president in a presidential government system is very important in the life of the nation and state. This is because the position of the president is both head of state and head of government. The United States of America is the originator of the presidential system, therefore the presence and gait of the presidents of the United States is interesting to study. If so far the study has been mostly carried out from a legal and political perspective, this research uses a film study perspective, especially biographical films (biopics). This research examines the political leadership of the president which is represented in four biographical films of the president of the United States, so that from these representations an image can be obtained of how the president's leadership is interpreted and constructed. This research is descriptive qualitative that explores primary data in the form of narrative and cinematographic elements of biographical films and secondary data derived from various other supporting references that help interpret representations. The objects of the research are biographical films of presidents whose narratives are when they were in a position to lead as a president, namely the Lincoln (2012), Wilson (1944), LBJ (2017) and Nixon (1995). Furthermore, this study uses the myth and symbol paradigm in American Studies and Roland Barthes' semiotic approach to examine the representation of the president's political leadership that appears in these biographical films. The results of this study indicate two things. First, the representation of the president's political leadership that appears includes 1). leadership that elaborates the national vision, 2). negotiative and manipulative leadership, 3). persuasive leadership, and 4). leadership related to emotional intelligence. Second, the construction of political leadership in the presidential biographical film includes 1). the strong influence of the filmmaker and the dynamics of the socio-political situation surrounding the birth of the film and 2). construct messages about heroic leadership, democratic leadership and leadership involving families. In the end, this study concludes that the presidential biographical film confirms the operation of presidential system of government which places stronger power on the president, but negates the operation of the principle of checks and balances which is the principle of democratic governance.
