Gossiping in The Movie Love and Friendship

Penelitian ini berfokus pada jenis-jenis gosip dan fungsi fungsi sosial gosip yang dilakukan oleh karakter wanita dan wanita-pria dalam film Love and Friendship yang disutradarai oleh Whit Stillman. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis gossip dan fungsi-fungsi sosialnya yang digunakan oleh karakter wanita dan karakter wanita-pria dalam film Love and Friendship. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua teori untuk menganalisis data, yaitu (1) teori jenisjenis gosip oleh Deborah Jones (1980), dan (2) teori fungsi sosial gosip oleh Eric K. Foster (2004). Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif-kualitatif. Selain itu, penghitungan sederhana dalam bentuk persentase juga digunakan untuk pemaparan data di dalam tabel. Dalam film ini, ditemukan masing-masing 89 ekspresi gosip yang digunakan oleh para karakter wanita dan wanita-pria. Pada jenis gosip, ditemukan bahwa semua jenis gosip digunakan oleh para karakter. Jenis gosip yang digunakan oleh kedua jenis karakter tersebut didominasi oleh jenis Chatting. Selain itu, semua fungsi sosial gossip yang ditemukan terkandung di dalam hasil analisis. Fungsi sosial gosip yang digunakan oleh para karakter didominasi oleh Providing Information. Dari hasil penelitian ini dapat ditarik kesimpulan bahwa gossip tidak hanya memiliki satu jenis yang bersifat negatif saja, namun memiliki beragam jenis dan fungsi sosial dalam hubungannya dengan komunikasi dan interaksi terhadap orang lain yang terlibat di dalamnya. Selain itu, perbedaan cara berkomunikasi pada gender wanita dan pria terlihat pada tujuannya, demikian pula dalam percakapan yang mengandung gosip.

This research focuses on the types of gossip and the social functions of gossip performed by female characters and female-male characters in the Love and Friendship movie directed by Whit Stillman. This research aims to identify the types of gossip and their social functions used by the female and female-male characters in the Love and Friendship movie. Two theories are used to analyse the data, namely (1) the theory of types of gossip by Deborah Jones (1980), and (2) the theory of social functions of gossip by Eric K. Foster (2004). The research uses descriptive-qualitative method. Additionally, a simple calculation in the form of a percentage is also used to calculate the data in the table. In this movie, the writer finds each of the 89 gossip expressions used by the female and female-male characters. In the type of gossip section, all kinds of gossip were used by the characters. The Chatting type dominates the findings used by both types of characters. On the other hand, all the social functions of gossip found are contained in the analysis. Moreover, the social function of gossip used by female and female-male characters is dominated by Providing Information. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that gossip does not only have a negative type but also has various types and social functions concerning communication and interaction with other people involved in it. Therefore, the differences in the ways of communicating between female and male genders can be seen in their goals, as well as when they are engaged in gossip conversations.
