Deciphering the Narratives Difference on the Proponents of Abstinence-only Education and Comprehensive Sex Education in the United States

Penelitian tentang pendidikan seks telah banyak dilakukan dan menunjukkan bahwa penerimaan instruksi tersebut berdampak pada perilaku dan kesehatan anak muda. Namun, penelitian yang berfokus pada narasi atau isi pembelajaran program pendidikan seks masih jarang. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini menganalisis lebih lanjut bagaimana narasi dari para pendukung program pendidikan perilaku pantang (abstinence) dan pendidikan seks komprehensif di Amerika Serikat memenuhi kebutuhan beragam anak muda terlepas dari identitas gender, orientasi seksual, dan hubungan seksual mereka. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menyoroti nilai atau norma masyarakat yang menjadi penghambat pelaksanaan program pendidikan seks komprehensif di Amerika Serikat. Penelitian ini menyajikan analisis kualitatif dan data dibagi menjadi dua kategori yaitu data primer dan data sekunder. Data primer penelitian ini berasal dari dari pedoman pendidikan seks UNESCO, video TED Talk dengan pembicara bernama Al Vernacchio, Christopher Culp, dan Jonathan Branfman, dan publikasi dari Family Policy Alliance, Family Research Council, dan Focus on the Family. Selain objek kajian utama, penelitian ini menggunakan data sekunder seperti artikel jurnal, tesis, e-book untuk mendukung analisis. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis naratif berfokus pada pola pengulangan narasi dalam konteks sosial tentang pendidikan seks di Amerika Serikat. Dalam mengkaji penelitian ini, perspektif kritis norma digunakan untuk menilai secara kritis norma seperti apa yang menentukan sudut pandang orang tentang apa yang dianggap normal dalam seksualitas. Teori reproduksi budaya juga digunakan untuk memahami perjuangan antar kelompok untuk mempertahankan dan memperkuat nilai masing-masing kelompok. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa narasi dari pendukung pendidikan seks yang komprehensif sesuai dengan kebutuhan anak muda di Amerika Serikat dibandingkan dengan program pendidikan perilaku pantang (abstinence). Menekankan toleransi dan rasa hormat, narasi dari pendidikan seks komprehensif berfokus pada menganalisis stigma di masyarakat tentang seksualitas dan berupaya untuk menolak diskriminasi dengan menerapkan perspektif humanistik dalam memandang seksualitas. Lebih lanjut, penelitian ini mengungkap bahwa program pendidikan seks komprehensif hanya dapat dilaksanakan di Amerika Serikat jika masyarakat dapat membongkar norma heteroseksual yang sudah lama bertahan dan meruntuhkan pengaruh agama dalam penerapan program pendidikan seks. Narasi antara para pendukung pendidikan perilaku pantang (abstinence) dan program pendidikan seks komprehensif menyajikan perjuangan antar kelompok untuk mengubah norma yang ada atau melestarikan pemikiran tradisional.

Many studies on sex education have been conducted, presenting that the reception of its instruction influences young people's sexual behavior and sexual health. However, the narrative or learning content on the existing sex education program is still infrequent. Hence, this study investigates further how the narratives difference on the proponents of abstinence-only education and comprehensive sex education programs in the United States meet the needs of diverse young people regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, and sexual relations. Moreover, this study also explores the values or norms of society that become the barriers to implementing comprehensive sex education programs in the United States. This study presented a qualitative analysis, and the data were divided into primary and secondary data. The primary data of this study was from UNESCO's sex education guidelines, TED Talk videos with speakers named Al Vernacchio, Christopher Culp, and Jonathan Branfman, and publications from Family Policy Alliance, Family Research Council, and Focus on the Family. Besides the mentioned data, this study used secondary data such as journal articles, theses, e-books to support the analysis. Focusing on the language, precisely the recurrence pattern of narratives in the social context about sex education in the United States, this study utilized narrative analysis. In examining this study, the norm critical perspective was used to critically assess what kind of norms determine people's point of view about what is considered normal in sexuality. Cultural reproduction theory was also used to understand the struggle between groups to maintain and reinforce their values. Results showed that narratives from comprehensive sex education advocates fit the needs of young people in the United States compared with abstinence-only education. Emphasizing tolerance and respect, the narratives of comprehensive sex education programs focused on analyzing the stigma in the society on sexuality and works to challenge discrimination by applying a humanistic perspective in seeing sexuality. Furthermore, this study revealed that a comprehensive sex education program could be implemented in the United States only if society could dismantle the long-standing heterosexual norm and pull down the religious influence in American society. The narratives between the advocates of comprehensive sex education and abstinence-only education presented the struggle between groups to transform the current norm or conserve traditional thinking.
