UBUD WRITERS & READERS FESTIVAL SEBAGAI USAHA REVITALISASI CITRA PARIWISATA DAN RUANG DISKUSI POLITIK-BUDAYA BALI PASCA BOM 2002 & 2005

Sejak dulu, Bali dikenal dengan citra eksotismenya dalam kancah dunia pariwisata dunia. Namun, citra ini sempat tercoreng akibat peristiwa bom di tahun 2002 dan 2005 yang menyebabkan kondisi ekonomi dan sosial Bali terpuruk. Salah satu usaha untuk membangkitkan lagi pariwisata Bali adalah munculnya Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) sejak tahun 2004. UWRF merupakan salah satu festival literasi terbesar di Indonesia yang menyandang menyandang gelar Top 5 The Best Literary Festivals di tahun 2019 oleh The Telegraph. Selain itu, UWRF dipandang memberikan ruang diskusi untuk pembicaraan isu-isu politik, sosial, dan kebudayaan Bali. Penelitian ini akan mengulas tentang: 1) Bagaimana UWRF berkontribusi dalam revitalisasi citra pariwisata Bali pasca bom, dan 2) Bagaimana UWRF menjadi ruang diskusi dalam membicarakan dinamika politik-budaya Bali. Penelitian ini melakukan wawancara terhadap 11 narasumber dan mengelompokkan mereka masing-maisng ke dalam empat kategori: Pelaku Pariwisata & Panitia Festival, Aktivis, Seniman & Sastrawan, serta Peneliti. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode studi kasus dengan merefleksikan teori-teori poskolonial dan perdebatan ideologi kebudayaan Indonesia antara Realisme Sosial vs Humanisme Universal. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa UWRF membuka imaji pariwisata baru lewat literasi dan sastra, namun kurang inklusif terhadap isu-isu lokal dan masalah masa lalu, seperti peristiwa 9165.

In the history, Bali has been known for its exotic image in the world tourism scene. However, this image was tarnished due to the bombings in 2002 and 2005 which caused the economic and social conditions of Bali to deteriorate. One of the efforts to revive Bali tourism is the emergence of Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (UWRF) since 2004. UWRF is one of the largest literacy festivals in Indonesia which holds the title of Top 5 The Best Literary Festivals in 2019 by The Telegraph. In addition, UWRF is seen as providing a discussion space for discussing political, social, and cultural issues in Bali. This research will review: 1) How UWRF contributed to the revitalization of Bali's tourism image after the bombing, and 2) How UWRF became a discussion space in discussing the dynamics of Balinese politics-culture. This study conducted interviews with 11 resource persons and grouped them into four categories: Tourism Actors & Festival Committees, Activists, Artists & Writers, and Researchers. This research was conducted using a case study method by reflecting on postcolonial theories and the ideological debate of Indonesian culture between Social Realism vs Universal Humanism. This research shows that UWRF opens a new image of tourism through literacy and literature, but less inclusive for local issues and problems of the past, such as the events of 9165.
