Psychoanalytic Perspective on Patrick Ness' A Monster Calls: Roles of The Monsters as Parts Of Conor's Unconscious

Penelitian ini membahas kemunculan dua monster sebagai perwujudan ketidaksadaran Conor di dalam novel A Monster Calls oleh Patrick Ness. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki peran dari masing-masing monster dan untuk menganalisis tujuan dari kemunculan mereka di dalam hidup Conor. Agar analisis dapat dilaksanakan, teori psikoanalisis yang dikemukakan oleh Sigmund Freud digunakan sebagai acuan teori. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, diketahui bahwa monster mimpi buruk adalah sebuah perwujudan dari id milik Conor, sedangkan monster pohon yew adalah perwujudan dari ego Conor. Berdasarkan teori yang dicetuskan oleh Freud, dapat dipahami bahwa kedua monster muncul di dalam kehidupan Conor karena dia telah merepresi banyak emosi negatif yang disebabkan oleh lingkungan dan orang-orang di sekitarnya, terutama ibunya yang sakit parah. Sebagai akibat dari represi yang dilakukan Conor, monster mimpi buruk terlahir sebagai representasi dari harapannya untuk terbebas dari beban yang ditanggungnya. Namun, harapan tersebut adalah sebuah harapan yang melawan aturan moral dari superego milik Conor, sehingga dia terjebak di antara gencarnya desakan permintaan dari id miliknya dan kekangan sewenang-wenang dari superego miliknya. Sebagai respon dari konflik yang ada di dalam diri Conor, monster pohon yew muncul sebagai ego milik Conor, dengan tujuan untuk memenuhi keinginan id milik Conor dengan cara yang tidak melanggar aturan superego miliknya. Agar tujuan tersebut dapat tercapai, monster pohon yew menceritakan tiga kisah yang mengungkap sifat manusia yang sebenarnya, dan dengan demikian, monster pohon yew membantu Conor untuk tidak menolak harapannya sendiri, dan akhirnya Conor dapat memperoleh kedamaian dengan cara menerima dan memaafkan dirinya sendiri.

This research discusses the appearance of the monsters as the manifestations of Conor's unconscious in A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. The objectives of the research are to examine the role of each monster and to analyze their purpose of appearing in Conor's life. In order to conduct the analysis, Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis is used as the theoretical reference. The research indicates that the nightmare monster is a manifestation of Conor's id, while the yew tree monster is a manifestation of Conor's ego. By referring to Freud's theory, it can be understood that both monsters appear in Conor's life because he has repressed a lot of negative emotions regarding the happenings and people around him, especially his terminally-ill mother. As a result of Conor's repression, the nightmare monster is born as a representation of his wish of being free from his current burdens. However, said wish is against the morality code of Conor's superego, therefore he is trapped between the relentless demands of his id and the tyrannical shackles of his superego. In response to Conor's inner conflicts, the yew tree monster as Conor's ego appears to fulfill his id's wish without violating his superego's moral restrictions. In order to do so, the yew tree monster tells Conor three stories that reveal the true nature of humans, and as a result, the yew tree monster helps Conor to come to terms with his wish and he can finally achieve peace by accepting and forgiving himself.
