DEVIATION FROM THE TRADITIONAL GENDER EXPECTATIONS ABOUT BOYS AS SEEN IN BENJAMIN ALIRE SAENZ'S ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE

Skripsi ini mengkaji penyimpangan dari ekspektasi gender tradisional oleh Ari Mendoza dan Dante Quintana dalam novel Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe karya Benjamin Alire Saenz. Fokus dari analisis ini adalah ekspektasi gender tradisional dan ciri maskulin yang dapat ditemukan di dalam novel. Untuk memahami bagaimana ekspektasi tradisional berdasarkan gender berasal dan apa yang termasuk perilaku tidak sesuai gender, penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengikuti teori performativitas gender milik Judith Butler. Selain itu, konsep maskulinitas dari Calvin Thomas digunakan untuk memahami konsep maskulinitas sebagai upaya menemukan ciri sifat maskulin yang terdapat di dalam novel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat ekspektasi gender tradisional dalam novel dan itu memberi dampak pada kehidupan karakter-karakter. Ari dan Dante secara perlahan condong mengikuti nilai-nilai yang awalnya mereka pahami sebagai tidak sesuai dengan gender. Kedua karakter berpindah dari menuruti dan menginternalisasi, menjadi menyimpang dari ekspektasi-ekspektasi tersebut.

This paper examines the deviation from the traditional gender expectations by main characters Ari Mendoza and Dante Quintana in Benjamin Alire Saenz's Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. The focus of the analysis is on traditional gender expectations and masculine qualities that can be found in the novel. The study is done by following Judith Butler's gender performativity theory to understand the traditional expectations based on gender and what is considered as gender-appropriate behaviors. In addition, the concept of masculinity from Calvin Thomas is used to understand the concept of masculinity in order to recognize qualities of being masculine that can be found in the novel. The result shows that the traditional gender expectations are present in the novel and have an impact in the characters' lives. It can be concluded that Ari and Dante gradually lean toward values that they initially understand to be gender-inappropriate. The characters proceed from complying and internalizing, to deviating from the traditional gender expectations.
