ESTHER GREENWOOD'S DEPRESSIVE DISORDER AS SEEN IN SYLVIA PLATH'S THE BELL JAR AS FICTIONAL CHARACTER

skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi karakter dan karakterisasi dari Esther Greenwood sebagai karakter utama dalam novel karya Sylvia Plath yang berjudul The Bell Jar. Fokus dari penelitian ini adalah untuk memeriksa, mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikasi gejala dari perilaku abnormal seperti yang terlihat pada Esther sebagai karakter fiksi, yang nantinya menarik kesimpulan pada karakterisasi dari gangguan depresi yang sudah dipertimbangkan pada Esther Greenwood sebagaimana yang diceritakan pada novel. Oleh karena itu, pendekatan pada skripsi ini adalah psikoanalisa. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini antara lain penelitian perpustakaan dan membaca teliti seluruh novel, artikel terpercaya, jurnal dan buku sebagai referensi untuk mendukung analisa. Pada akhirnya, hasil dari skripsi ini menunjukkan gangguan depresi mayor / Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) sebagai tipe dari gangguan depresi yang diderita Esther Greeenwood pada novel.

This graduating paper attempts to identify character and characterization of Esther Greenwood as the main character in Sylvia Plath's novel The Bell Jar. The focus of this paper is to examine Esther's character, identify and classify the symptoms of abnormal behaviour as seen through Esther as fictional character, which later on concludes to the characterization of depressive disorders which Esher Greenwood is already considered of as told in the novel. Therefore, the approach of this paper is psychoanalysis. The methods used in this research are library research and close reading through the novel, reliable articles, journals, and books as the references to support the analysis. Eventually, the result of this paper shows Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) as the type of depressive disorder that Esther is suffered from throughout the novel.
